EarthScope National Meeting convenes for the last time in Anchorage, Alaska

Geoscientists from all over the country will soon gather in Anchorage, Alaska, for the final EarthScope National Meeting, to be held May 16-18, 2017 at the Dena'ina Convention Center.

Come discover frontier Earth science emerging in the final stages of the EarthScope program!

EarthScope is a program funded by the National Science Foundation whose goal is to decipher the structure and evolution of the North American continent. In 2011, the project topped Popular Science's "The 10 Most Ambitious Experiments in the Universe Today." http://www.popsci.com/science/article/2011-07/supersized-10-most-awe-inspiring-projects-universe?image=9 The 15-year project will draw to a close in 2018, with this May marking its seventh and final national meeting.

Highlights of the meeting:

  • A full day of EarthScope synthesis–presenting the main results of the EarthScope project–on Tuesday, May 17.
  • Awards ceremony for the winners of EarthScope's first visualization challenge–Visualizing EarthScope Science (VESS). The competition garnered artistic renderings of research from a wide variety of EarthScope scientists, and winners were selected by the public.   • An Alaska-themed session on Wednesday, May 18 focused on updates of recent findings from the final EarthScope deployments in Alaska.
  • 21 delegates from Sinoprobe–China's subsurface imaging project similar to EarthScope–attending the final EarthScope meeting to learn about the scientific objectives and results.
  • Pre-meeting workshops and a post-meeting field trip led by local EarthScope scientists. Attendees will visit iconic locations impacted by the 1964 Great Alaska earthquake, the second-largest magnitude quake ever recorded. Sites include the ghost forest and the rolling-hill liquefaction scarps of Turnagain Heights.
