Pediatrician and public health advocate who exposed Flint water crisis will speak during the Opening General Session on April 27 in Baltimore
BALTIMORE – Pediatric Academic Societies is pleased to announce Dr. Mona Hanna-Attisha, MD, MPH, FAAP as the featured opening speaker at the Pediatric Academic Societies (PAS) 2019 Meeting, taking place April 24 – May 1 in Baltimore.
Dr. Hanna-Attisha, a pediatrician and public health advocate who exposed the Flint water crisis, will speak during the Opening General Session on Saturday, April 27. Dr. Joshua Sharfstein, MD, Vice Dean for Public Health Practice and Community Engagement for the Bloomberg School of Public Health, will interview Dr. Hanna-Attisha as part of the opening session.
Dr. Hanna-Attisha wrote about her experiences in the fight for justice in Flint, Mich. in the book What The Eyes Don’t See. Her research revealed children in Flint were exposed to lead. Dr. Hanna-Attisha courageously publicized the water crisis in Flint and faced a brutal backlash.

Shanley, PAS Program Chair. “We look forward to hearing her inspiring personal story and learning more about how her leadership and research helped to make a difference for children in Flint.”
Dr. Hanna-Attisha is an associate professor of pediatrics and human development at Michigan State University. She is also the founder and director of the Michigan State University and Hurley Children’s Hospital Pediatric Public Health Initiative, a model program to mitigate the impact of the Flint water crisis so that all Flint children grow up healthy and strong.
The PAS Meeting is the largest and most prestigious pediatric research meeting in the world, with over 9,000 attendees. The PAS 2019 Meeting will feature several new PAS Lab Pilots, including three new presentation formats and more than 4,000 scholarly sessions, abstract presentations, workshops and special interest groups, original science and ancillary events.
The Opening General Session schedule begins with complimentary welcome coffee served from 10 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., followed by the opening address with Dr. Hanna-Attisha and Dr. Sharfstein from 10:30 a.m. to noon, and concludes with a complimentary luncheon from noon to 1 p.m.
