86 grants will support scientific innovation

U.S. Energy Secretary Rick Perry today announced that the Department of Energy will award 86 grants totaling $95 million to 74 small businesses in 21 states. Funded through DOE’s Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs, today’s selections are for Phase II research and development. Small businesses that demonstrated technical feasibility for innovations during their Phase I grants competed for funding for prototype or processes development during Phase II. In addition, prior Phase II awardees competed for sequential Phase II awards to continue prototype and process development. The median Phase II award is $1,000,000 for a period of two years.

Highlighted below are selected grants for each of the research and development programs that provided funding for these projects:

  • Photonic-Storage Subsystem Input/Output Interface
  • Network Measurement and Congestion Analysis
  • Seamless Cross-Technology Communication Platform for Internet of Things Applications
  • Atomically Smooth Surfaces as Substrates for Advanced Neutron Supermirrors
  • Optimization of Focusing Systems for Ultrafast Electron Microscopy
  • High Performance Membrane Heat Exchangers for HVAC
  • Breakthrough Photo-thermal Modulation-based IR Microscope for Sub-micron Characterization of Cellular Metabolism and Chemical Processes within Cells
  • High-Speed, Nanoscale Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry
  • Profiling Airborne Microwave Radiometer for Atmospheric and Cloud Research
  • Radiation Hardened Infrared Focal Plane Arrays
  • Precise and Ultra-stable Laser Polarization Control for Polarized Electron Beam Generation
  • Low Cost Data Acquisition Synchronization for Nuclear Physics Applications

###

Small businesses play a major role in spurring innovation and creating jobs in the U.S. economy. The SBIR and STTR programs were created by Congress to leverage small businesses to advance innovation at federal agencies.
