New Rochelle, NY, September 19, 2023—Mary Ann Liebert, Inc. announces the launch of Journal of Medical Extended Reality (JMXR), the new open access peer-reviewed research journal dedicated to the advancement of extended reality in medicine. JMXR is launching in partnership with the American Medical Extended Reality Association (AMXRA), the premier medical society advancing the science and practice of medical extended reality, as their Official Journal. The journal welcomes your submission and will consider virtual, augmented, and mixed reality research, alongside other emerging technologies.

Spearheaded by Editor-in-Chief Dr. Brennan Spiegel, Professor of Medicine and Director of Health Services Research at Cedars-Sinai, where he created the Virtual Medicine program dedicated to studying XR in medicine, the Journal’s mission is to centralize research to stimulate innovative approaches, promote evidence-based practices, and drive the adoption of XR technologies in healthcare settings.

“The significance of Journal of Medical Extended Reality (JMXR) lies in our collective pursuit of unlocking the potential of Medical XR, while ensuring rigorous scientific scrutiny and the highest standards of evidence-based research,” says Dr. Brennan Spiegel. “The Journal will serve as an essential catalyst to clinicians, researchers, technologists, and policymakers for the accelerated growth of Medical XR, promoting critical dialogue, ethical considerations, and the dissemination of invaluable expertise.”

“We are thrilled to partner with Mary Ann Liebert on the creation of JMXR,” states Mark Zhang DO MMSc, President and Founder of the American Medical Extended Reality Association. “As the leading society dedicated to advancing the science and practice of medical extended reality, we believe JMXR represents a foundational contribution to the field of medical extended reality and will become the journal of record for the specialty.”

Journal of Medical Extended Reality invites submissions on a wide range of topics related to XR in medicine including but not limited to:

  • Clinical application of XR in neurology, psychology, and pain management
  • Uses of XR in medical, pediatric, and surgical subspecialities
  • Artificial intelligence in medical XR
  • Medical education, including virtual anatomy and immersive simulation platforms
  • Therapeutics and rehabilitation, including pain management and mental health
  • Human-Computer interaction and user experience for ergonomics and ethics
  • Regulatory implementation such as economics and insurance coverage for XR

We encourage the submission of original research articles, systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and case studies on the use of extended reality in medicine. Our Editorial Board consists of experts in the field of medical extended reality who have a broad range of expertise and experience in academia, industry, and clinical practice and who will ensure that all submissions are reviewed by peers from the scholarly community of extended reality. This team will ensure the highest standards of scientific rigor and transparency.

The Journal of Medical Extended Reality is dedicated to advancing the field by promoting research, collaboration, and knowledge exchange among interdisciplinary professionals. By embracing the potential of XR in healthcare, the Journal serves as an essential resource for a broad range of individuals, including medical researchers, healthcare professionals, educators, technology developers, administrators, students, industry professionals, ethicists, legal experts, and patient groups, all seeking to understand the latest advancements and applications of XR in the medical field and revolutionize the practice of medicine.

By aggregating this previously disparate research into one peer-reviewed forum entirely dedicated to medical extended reality, the Journal is determined to help professionals in the healthcare field learn how to utilize XR solutions in their everyday work. As healthcare continues to advance, the Journal will be on the cutting edge of advancing healthcare’s virtual frontiers.
