BMC Pharmacology and Toxicology Opens Call for New Editorial Board Members

The open access journal BMC Pharmacology and Toxicology has launched an international search for new Editorial Board Members, a move that reflects both the journal’s growing visibility and the mounting volume of manuscripts flowing through its peer-review pipeline. In an announcement published on the journal’s website, the editorial team explained that as submissions increase, the journal must expand its corps of academic editors in order to preserve the rigorous standards that govern how research is evaluated before publication. The call is aimed at researchers working across the full breadth of pharmacology and toxicology, and it offers a revealing window into how editorial quality control actually operates at a modern open access journal.

BMC Pharmacology and Toxicology is part of the BMC Series published by Springer Nature, a family of journals built around a distinctive editorial philosophy. The journal considers articles on all aspects of chemically defined therapeutic and toxic agents, spanning experimental and clinical pharmacology, clinical trials, and toxicology. Crucially, the journal states plainly that it does not make editorial decisions on the basis of a study’s perceived interest or its likely impact. Instead, the criterion is scientific validity: a research article must present a scientifically sound research question, deploy suitable methods and analysis, and adhere to community-agreed standards relevant to its field. This validity-based model, often described as soundness over novelty, has become one of the defining features of the BMC Series and a touchstone in ongoing debates about how scientific publishing should judge a paper’s worth.

The expansion of the editorial board is framed by the journal as a direct response to growth. Open access publishing has reshaped the economics and logistics of scholarly communication over the past two decades, and journals in the BMC portfolio have seen steady increases in submission volumes as funders and institutions around the world adopt open access mandates. Every additional manuscript entering the system must be assessed, assigned, reviewed, and adjudicated, and each of those steps depends on the availability of qualified academics willing to volunteer their expertise. When submission growth outpaces editorial capacity, the risks are familiar to anyone who follows publishing: slower decisions, overburdened reviewers, and pressure on the quality of triage. By recruiting new board members, the journal is attempting to scale its human infrastructure in step with demand.

The disciplines the journal has singled out for recruitment sketch a map of where its editorial needs are greatest. Candidates are invited from basic pharmacology, the laboratory science of how drugs interact with biological systems at the molecular, cellular, and organismal levels. Clinical pharmacology is another priority, covering how therapeutic agents behave in patients, including dosing, drug interactions, and therapeutic response. The journal is also seeking experts in computational, in silico, and modeling studies, an area that has expanded dramatically as machine learning and simulation approaches have entered drug research. Drug design, discovery and delivery constitutes a fourth target area, encompassing the pipeline from molecular identification through formulation and delivery technology. Finally, toxicology, the study of adverse effects of chemical agents on living organisms, rounds out the list, reflecting the journal’s remit over harmful as well as therapeutic compounds.

The criteria for candidacy are specific and, in the current publishing landscape, notable. Applicants must have a minimum of fifteen research papers published in reputable, English-language, peer-reviewed journals. They should also have been frequently listed as corresponding author, in first or last author positions, during the last five years, a requirement intended to demonstrate that candidates have recent, hands-on experience leading research projects and managing the publication process from the author’s side. Beyond publication metrics, the journal emphasizes demonstrable expertise that fits within the journal’s scope and its current needs. The announcement also stresses a set of values: the journal is interested in individuals who are committed to open access, data sharing, and innovation in scientific publishing, signaling that editorial service is treated as an extension of a researcher’s broader engagement with the reform of scholarly communication.

Once appointed, Editorial Board Members take on a role that sits at the operational heart of peer review. According to the announcement, they are primarily responsible for assessing incoming manuscripts for their suitability for peer review, selecting reviewers who meet the journal’s requirements, and recommending decisions on the basis of the reviewers’ reports together with their own assessment, all while adhering to the journal’s editorial policies. This triage function is among the most consequential in the entire publishing ecosystem. The initial editorial assessment determines whether a paper enters full review at all, and the choice of reviewers shapes the technical scrutiny a manuscript receives. The journal expects each board member to handle a minimum of twelve manuscripts per year across a range of disciplines within their broader subject area, a workload designed to be meaningful without becoming prohibitive for working scientists.

The journal also frames the role in terms of service to authors. Editorial Board Members are expected to provide a professional and supportive service, ensuring that the manuscripts for which they are responsible fulfill the journal’s requirements and are handled efficiently and appropriately through peer review. They are further expected to act as advocates for the journal within the scientific community, supporting its ethos, scope, editorial standards, and policies. In practical terms, this means representing the journal at conferences, encouraging suitable submissions, and helping to communicate the journal’s validity-based editorial model to researchers who may be more accustomed to journals that filter by novelty or expected impact.

New appointees will not be left to learn the role alone. The announcement states that Editorial Board Members will receive training and that the journal’s in-house professional editors will provide administrative support throughout. Board members report to the Editor of the journal, an arrangement that pairs academic subject expertise with professional publishing infrastructure. This hybrid model is characteristic of the BMC Series: academic editors supply the domain judgment needed to evaluate specialized science, while salaried editorial staff manage logistics, policy compliance, and consistency across the journal. For early- to mid-career researchers, such positions can also serve as a form of professional development, offering insight into the editorial process and a network of contacts across a subfield, though the role demands a genuine and sustained time commitment.

For researchers who meet the criteria and wish to apply, the journal has opened an online application form, and more information about editorial board responsibilities is available on the BMC for editors pages of the Springer Nature website. The recruitment drive is a reminder that peer review, for all its automation and platform technology, remains fundamentally a human enterprise sustained by scientists who volunteer their judgment. As open access journals continue to absorb a growing share of the world’s research output, the quiet work of recruiting, training, and supporting the academics who triage and adjudicate manuscripts becomes ever more central to the integrity of the scientific record. BMC Pharmacology and Toxicology’s call for new board members is, at its core, an investment in that human infrastructure, an effort to ensure that as the journal grows, the scrutiny applied to every chemically defined therapeutic and toxic agent reported within its pages grows with it.
