ISN World Congress of Nephrology 2019 highlights glomerulonephritis and integrated end-stage kidney disease
Brussels, February 14, 2019 – The upcoming ISN World Congress of Nephrology (WCN) will focus on the issues of glomerulonephritis and integrated end-stage kidney disease. Plenary sessions and forum discussions will also focus on topics relevant to nephrology around the world and across Asia Pacific. Organized by the International Society of Nephrology (ISN), co-hosted by the Asian Pacific Society of Nephrology and the Australian New Zealand Society of Nephrology, the meeting will take place in Melbourne, Australia from April 12 to 15, 2019.
‘850 million people worldwide are now estimated to have some form of kidney disease. In 2010, 2.6 million people with end-stage kidney disease or ‘kidney failure’ received dialysis or transplantation worldwide, a number that it is projected to increase to 5.4 million by 2030. Up to three times that number died because they didn’t have access to dialysis,’ says ISN President David Harris.
In addition to providing cutting-edge scientific sessions, the congress will also host the second ISN Global Kidney Policy Forum on April 12, 2019. This forum will gather international and regional decision makers, health care professionals, including nephrologists, healthcare workers, surgeons, and primary care physicians, researchers, non-governmental organizations, patients and health advocates, with the aim to review the challenges of kidney care in the Oceania and South East Asia region.
Building on the findings of the first Policy Forum, they will review and discuss policy-related solutions on a regional level and address the issue of equitable access to kidney care, including the prevention, detection and management of kidney disease.
Crucially, at the forum, ISN will ask stakeholders interested in addressing the growing burden of kidney disease to pledge their commitment to kidney health by supporting ISN’s 12 Recommendations to Global Kidney Health. This will provide a strong basis for developing comprehensive national kidney care strategies.
Furthermore, a session on April 14, 2019 will report on the outcome of the second ISN Global Kidney Health Atlas, a survey that aims to specifically define the current global status of end-stage kidney disease care structures and organization.

The World Congress of Nephrology (WCN) 2019 is an International Society of Nephrology (ISN) event hosted by the Australian and New Zealand Society of Nephrology (ANZSN) and the Asian Pacific Society of Nephrology (APSN). WCN 2019 will focus on glomerulonephritis, and on integrated end-stage kidney disease, and covers all topics relevant to global and Asia Pacific nephrology.
