From signals to cognition

Human beings are living inside an ocean of signals. These signals enable human beings to demonstrate intelligence. Similarly, machines are also surrounded by signals. Artificial intelligence (AI) or machine intelligence has become a hot topic for many decades due to the high expectation of the public on the emergence of smart machines and smart products.
However, the AI research community is still struggling to determine the foci of machine intelligence. For instance, the low-level focus of AI is to advocate computer-aided human intelligence. We believe that the more challenging focus should aim at creating machines that can achieve human-like self-intelligence by themselves.
The development of machine’s self-intelligence faces two fundamental issues. The first one is to discover, or formulate, the physical principles behind the transformation of visual signals to cognitive states of knowing the meanings of these visual signals. The second one is to discover, or formulate, the physical principles behind the transformation of audio signals to cognitive states of knowing the meanings of these audio signals.
New Foundation of Artificial Intelligence lays out the new foundation of AI with two objectives in mind. The first objective is to shed light on this new direction which is founded on the use of human languages together with an extension into a technical language (i.e. mathematics) and programming languages. In this way, the answer to the question of knowledge representation becomes obvious to all researchers in the AI community. The second objective is to provide the teaching materials which will guide students in AI to master the fundamentals of achieving computer-aided human intelligence, as well as to prepare students to venture into the achievements of machine’s self-intelligence.

About the Authors
Xie Ming received his B.Eng. degree in control and automation engineering from the East-China Institute of Textile Technology (now Donghua University, Shanghai, China). Subsequently, under the prestigious overseas scholarship of the Chinese government, he completed both postgraduate studies and doctorate research works, and has received his Master degree from the University of Valenciennes, France in 1986 as well as his Ph.D. degree from University of Rennes, France in 1989. Since 1986, he has worked as Research Assistant at IRISA-INRIA Rennes, Expert Engineer (1990-1993) at INRIA Sophia-Antipolis, Lecturer (1996-1997)/Senior Lecturer (1998)/Associate Professor (since 1999) of Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. He is also Fellow (2000-2002) of the Singapore-MIT Alliance (SMA) (Affiliated with Innovation in Manufacturing Systems and Technology Program), Guest Professor of Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan, China (2002, 2006), University Professor (awarded by China’s Jiangsu Provincial Government) (2014), Entrepreneurship Professor (awarded by China’s Jiangsu Provincial Government) (2020-2022), and Dean of the College of Electrical Engineering and Control Science at Nanjing Tech University, China (2014-2016). In terms of social services, Ming XIE is a member of the People’s Action Party (PAP), Singapore the Founding Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Humanoid Robotics (IJHR which is SCI/SCIE indexed), the Founding President of the Robotics Society of Singapore (RSS), Founding President of the Science-Technology Alliance between Singapore and China (STASC), Founding Member of GD-HK-MC Greater Bay Area International Chamber of Commerce (Macau) (GHMBIC), and was the General Chair of the 2007 International Conference on Climbing and Walking Robots (CLAWAR), and the General Chair of the 2009 International Conference on Intelligent Robotics and Applications (ICIRA). When he was at the College of Electrical Engineering and Control Science of Nanjing Tech University, he undertook a holistic reform of the undergraduate education program as well as postgraduate education program. In addition, he has also reformed the governance and reward systems at the same college. In terms of industrial services, he has worked as Assistant Engineer (internship) at Renault Automation in Paris, Application Engineer attached to Development Center of Renault Automobile in Paris, Technical Consultant for projects of Asia Electronics Pte Ltd, Technical Consultant for projects of the Port of Singapore Authority, Technical Consultant for the training of engineers of Delphi Automotive Systems Pte Ltd, Technical Consultant for the training of engineers of ST Aerospace Ltd, Technical Consultant for the training of engineers of MuRata Electronics Pte Ltd, Technical Consultant for projects of Sony Electronics Pte Ltd, and Technical Consultant of Singapore Power Ltd. In terms of high education, he has taught courses such as Robotics, Artificial Intelligence, Applied Machine Vision, Measurement and Sensing Systems, Microprocessor Systems, and University Physics. In terms of scientific research, Ming XIE has published two authored books, two edited books, several book chapters, over 10 patents of invention, over 30 research papers in scientific journals and over 100 research papers in international conferences. Ming XIE has been a recipient of the best conference paper award from World Automation Congress, the best conference paper award from CLAWAR, the outstanding paper award from International Journal of Industrial Robot, the Gold Prize (S$8K) from CrayQuest, the Grand Champion Prize (S$15K) from CrayQuest, A-Star’s Best Research Idea Prize (S$5K), and the Silver Medal from Dragon Design Foundation. Ming XIE was the lead co-founder of the Laboratory of Intelligent Vehicle (now known as the Intelligent Systems Center) at Nanyang Technological University, and the lead co-founder of the Institute of Intelligent Systems and Robotics at Nanjing Tech University. Ming XIE’s research interests include machine intelligence (cognitive vision, natural language understanding), humanoid robotics (design, control, biped walking, mobile manipulation) and autonomous vehicles (perception, planning, and control). In terms of techno-entrepreneurship, Ming XIE was the founder of iCar Electronics Co. Ltd., the founder of Humanoid Robotics Pte. Ltd., and the founder of SMAROBOT Co. Ltd. Ming XIE was one of recipients of the Second Prize from the 2009 Spring Techno-entrepreneurship Competition organized by the Chinese Ministry of Education, one of the recipients of the First Prize from the 2010 Spring Techno-entrepreneurship Competition organized by the Chinese Ministry of Education, and one of recipients of the Thousand Elite Plan’s Expert Title awarded by Shanghai’s Municipal Government.
Hui Chen is Director of China Society of Automotive Engineering, Secretary-General of the Automobile Intelligent Transportation Branch, Member of the Steering Technology Branch, Member of the National Automotive Standardization Technical Committee Steering System Subcommittee, and Member of SAE International, the Society of Automotive Engineers of Japan (JSAE), and IEEE.
In 1985, he graduated from the Automation Department of China Textile University (now Donghua University, Shanghai, China) with a bachelor’s degree. After obtaining a master’s degree in automation from the university in 1988, he stayed on as a teaching assistant.
In 1993, he went to Yokohama National University, Japan to study for a doctorate degree. In 1996, he received a doctorate degree in electronics and information engineering from Yokohama National University.
In 1996, he joined NSK Co., Ltd. (NSK) and served as Assistant Manager of the Research and Development Center of the Electric Power Steering System (EPS) Division.
In 2002, he returned to China and served as a professor and director of the Chassis Electronic Control System Research Office of Tongji University. In 2005, he was selected as the “New Century Excellent Talent Support Program” by the Ministry of Education. In 2010, he established “Tongji University Automobile College-JTEKT Automotive Active Safety Technology Joint Laboratory” and served as the laboratory leader. In 2013, he won the “Good Tutor in My Mind” Spring Weather Award from Tongji University and the first prize of Shanghai Science and Technology Progress Award “Key Technologies and Application of Integrated Control of Automobile Multi-source Powertrain”.
Zhencheng Hu is Founder and CEO of Edge Perception Technology in Shanghai, China. Dr Hu successfully founded WiSSEN Intelligent Sensing Technology in 2011, which has grown into an important worldwide supplier of automotive camera modules. Dr Hu has been working in Kumamoto University, Japan for 13 years as an Associate Professor. He received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Kumamoto University in 2001 and held different positions in the image processing frontier industry before he joined the faculty team in ITS Lab in Kumamoto University.
Dr Hu has been involved over the last 22 years in the field of computer vision, intelligent vehicles, sensor fusion and augmented reality, and have published more than 100 technical papers in relative journals and conferences since 1996. Dr. Hu holds more than 20 patents (pending included) in Japan, US, and Europe.
