The University of Akron's Conquer Chiari Research Center (CCRC) will hold an open house on Saturday, July 21, at the C. Blake McDowell Law Center from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. The CCRC team conducts research on Chiari malformation, a serious neurological syndrome in which the bottom part of the brain descends into the top part of the spinal canal, putting pressure on both the brain and spinal cord and causing many symptoms.

The CCRC, created in 2012, is a multidisciplinary research center consisting of 10 faculty members from the departments of mechanical and biomedical engineering, psychology, math, chemical and biomolecular engineering, chemistry, exercise science and biology. They collaborate with researchers around the world on projects that include novel medical imaging, genetics, biomarkers, neuropsychology and neurosurgery.

The open house will feature research presentations by CCRC faculty, poster presentations by students and a Chiari patient's personal story. In addition, Dr. Jahangir Maleki, a pain neurologist from the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, will be a special guest. Fun family activities are planned for the event, including a photo booth, face painting and a coloring table for children.

Anyone interested to learn more about Chiari and the research going on is encouraged to attend. Admission to the open house is free and lunch will be provided for those who register in advance online.
