University of Oklahoma Professor Yiqi Luo has been elected as a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union for distinguished contributions to the field of global change ecology, particularly for pioneering development and application of data assimilation for ecological forecasting. Ecological forecasting will allow ecologists to predict how changes in the environment will alter an entire ecosystem in the future.

Luo is a professor in the Department of Microbiology and Plant Biology, OU College of Arts and Sciences, and director of the EcoLab at the Stephenson Research and Technology Center on the OU Research Campus. He will be honored during a ceremony at the 2016 AGU Fall Meeting in December in San Francisco, California. Only one in a thousand members is elected to AGU Fellowship each year.

"We are honored to add your name to the ranks of AGU Fellows. We look forward to recognizing your scientific achievement, and we thank you for being a part of AGU," said Margaret Leinen, AGU president.

Among the most notable of Luo's research is his work on terrestrial carbon cycle in addition to his pioneering research on data assimilation and ecological forecasts. His team has conducted experimental modeling and theoretical studies of carbon dynamics in terrestrial ecosystems in response to global change. His research aims to determine ecosystem responses to global change and incorporate experimental and observational data into models to constrain their forecasts of future changes in ecosystem services.
