Mobile Health Applications Show Promise for Psoriasis Self-Management and Quality of Life

A systematic review examining the efficacy of mobile health (mHealth) applications in managing psoriasis has concluded that these digital tools demonstrate potential for improving treatment adherence and enhancing dermatology-related quality of life among affected individuals.

Psoriasis is recognized as a chronic inflammatory skin disease that imposes a significant psychosocial and healthcare burden on those living with the condition. In response to this substantial burden, mHealth applications have emerged as promising technological interventions designed to support self-management strategies and potentially improve both clinical and patient-reported outcomes. This specific systematic review was designed to synthesize the current body of evidence concerning the efficacy of these mHealth applications within the context of psoriasis self-management.

The research followed rigorous scientific protocols, adhering strictly to the PRISMA 2020 guidelines for systematic reviews. The search strategy involved comprehensive database screening across Web of Science, PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar. The search scope covered studies published from the database inception up until May 1, 2025. The inclusion criteria were highly specific: eligible studies had to assess the effects of mobile self-management applications on individuals diagnosed with psoriasis, specifically including randomized controlled trials and other original research studies published in the English language.

To ensure methodological rigor, the review established clear exclusion criteria. Studies focusing on self-management using technologies other than mobile devices were excluded. Furthermore, research addressing the self-management of other chronic conditions, or studies for which the full text was unavailable, were also excluded from the final synthesis. The methodological quality of the included primary studies was systematically assessed using the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool (MMAT).

The resulting synthesis included eight distinct studies that evaluated or described mobile self-management applications for psoriasis. The results, presented through narrative synthesis, indicated that the most consistent and robust support for these interventions relates to improvements observed in quality of life and treatment adherence among the users. This suggests that the utility of mobile technology in this clinical area may be most effectively realized in these specific domains.

While the findings suggest that the use of mobile self-management applications may improve selected outcomes for individuals with psoriasis, the review highlighted critical limitations. The limited number of primary studies available restricts the ability to definitively assess the effects of these applications on certain outcomes, most notably psoriasis symptom severity. This heterogeneity and scarcity of data regarding symptom severity remains a significant gap in the current literature.

The review noted that various mHealth approaches were utilized in the assessed studies, including teledermatology, digital therapeutics, and AI-assisted monitoring. Furthermore, the most frequently employed outcome measures in the literature reviewed were the Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI) and the Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI), indicating these metrics are standard in assessing the impact of these interventions.

To enhance the effectiveness of these digital health tools, the review strongly suggested that integrating patient-centered usability evaluation during the entire application development lifecycle could significantly improve user engagement, overall acceptability, and ultimately, the intervention’s clinical impact. This emphasizes a shift toward designing technology that is not only clinically sound but also highly usable and accessible to the target patient population.

In summary, the evidence currently supports the notion that mHealth interventions can serve as valuable adjunct tools in the management of psoriasis by bolstering patient adherence to treatment plans and positively influencing their perceived quality of life. However, future research must address the current limitations, particularly by generating more robust primary studies that can conclusively evaluate the impact of these technologies on objective clinical measures like symptom severity.
