The American Society of Anesthesiologists named Jeffrey T. Mueller, M.D., FASA, as its new president on October 20, 2026, with Mueller assuming office during the organization’s ANESTHESIOLOGY 2026 annual meeting in San Diego. His one-year term will focus on the society’s economic future, payment policy and the continued role of anesthesiologist-led care, while keeping patient safety and quality central to the organization’s priorities. Mueller is an assistant professor of anesthesiology at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science in Rochester, Minnesota, and a staff anesthesiologist at Mayo Clinic Hospital in Phoenix.

Mueller said he would use his year as president to advocate for fair Medicare payments, greater accountability among large insurance companies and participation by anesthesiologists in healthcare policy decisions. He also emphasized the need to protect anesthesiologist-led care and described the society’s educational resources, scientific publications, mentoring, coding and billing support as important tools for members. “It is an honor to serve as president of ASA,” he said. “I am committed to advancing the Society’s mission, especially securing anesthesiology’s economic future, while ensuring patient safety remains our top priority.”

The leadership appointment places Mueller at the head of ASA, an educational, research and scientific society founded in 1905 that reports more than 62,000 members. ASA states that its members evaluate and supervise patients’ medical care before, during and after surgery, lead care in intensive care units, and treat acute and chronic pain. Mueller’s stated priorities encompass clinical quality and safety, professional education, support for anesthesiologists and issues affecting reimbursement. Patrick Giam, M.D., FASA, ASA’s immediate past president, said Mueller’s background in healthcare economics would help the society address economic challenges facing anesthesiology and make the specialty’s quality, safety and efficiency visible to commercial insurers and government payment systems.

Mueller has held numerous leadership positions at ASA, including president-elect, first vice president, vice president for professional affairs, chair of the Division of Administrative Affairs and a director on the ASA Board. He currently serves on the ASA Executive Committee and Administrative Council. His broader professional experience includes serving as president of both the Arizona Society of Anesthesiologists and the Arizona Medical Association, serving on the Arizona Hospital and Healthcare Association’s Board of Directors, and serving on the American Hospital Association’s Committee on Clinical Leadership. He has also chaired the Anesthesia Quality Institute’s Board of Directors and the ASAPAC Executive Board.

Mueller earned a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Tulsa and his medical degree from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. He completed an internship in internal medicine and a residency in anesthesiology at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science and is board-certified in anesthesiology. ASA recognized his contributions to the specialty with the Bertram W. Coffer, M.D., Excellence in Government Award in 2015. He also received the National Leadership Award from the Arizona Medical Association and the Distinguished Service Award from the Arizona Society of Anesthesiologists in 2023.
