Pork Consumers See Meaningful Weight Loss, Modestly Improved Diets Over Six Months

A new study is challenging the idea that pork must disappear from the plate when people are trying to lose weight. In a secondary analysis of adults enrolled in a six-month digital weight-management program, participants who continued to report eating pork achieved clinically meaningful weight loss while also improving the overall quality of their diets. The findings, published May 29, 2026, in Nutrition & Diabetes, suggest that weight management may depend less on banning a single food and more on whether people can sustain a balanced eating pattern over time. However, the study does not prove that pork caused the weight loss, and it offers no evidence that one pork product is healthier than another.

The analysis included 187 adults with overweight or obesity who participated in the WW digital weight-management program between January and November 2023. At the beginning of the study, participants had a mean body-mass index of 33.6 kilograms per square meter and an average age of 47.7 years. Rather than assigning volunteers to eat or avoid pork, researchers examined dietary information collected during the program. Participants completed dietary recalls using the Automated Self-Administered 24-Hour Dietary Assessment Tool, known as ASA24, which is designed to record foods and beverages consumed over a defined period. Researchers then classified participants according to whether they continued to report pork consumption during the six-month intervention.

Of the 187 participants, 147, or 78.6 percent, were categorized as “habitual pork consumers.” This designation did not necessarily mean that they ate pork every day or consumed a particular amount. It reflected the continued appearance of pork in their dietary recalls during the study period. The researchers also did not separate bacon, ham, sausage, pork chops, tenderloin or other cuts in a way that would allow the health effects of individual products to be compared. Preparation methods, portion sizes, accompanying foods and the broader dietary context were therefore important variables that the analysis could not fully isolate.

On average, habitual pork consumers lost 5.3 percent of their starting body weight over six months, equivalent to approximately 10 pounds in the study’s description. A weight reduction of 5 percent is often considered clinically meaningful because even a relatively modest decrease can be associated with improvements in metabolic health, including blood pressure, blood glucose regulation and blood lipid levels. The study also reported a 4.3-point increase in participants’ Healthy Eating Index-2020 scores, rising from 55.0 to 59.2. The index measures how closely a person’s reported diet aligns with the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, evaluating components such as fruit, vegetables, whole grains, seafood and plant proteins, as well as sodium, saturated fat and added sugars.

The results are significant because pork is frequently treated in popular diet culture as incompatible with weight loss. Yet nutrition science generally evaluates foods within dietary patterns rather than as isolated moral categories. Pork can vary considerably in its nutritional profile: a lean cut prepared with vegetables and whole grains presents a different combination of calories, sodium and saturated fat from processed pork served in a large portion with refined carbohydrates. The present analysis does not establish that pork improves diet quality, but it does indicate that people can include pork in a structured weight-management program while making measurable progress.

Lead author Ana M. Palacios, an assistant professor in the Department of Health Policy and Community Health at Georgia Southern University’s Jiann-Ping Hsu College of Public Health, said the research addressed a common perception that pork is inconsistent with healthy eating or weight loss. The investigators wanted to determine whether adults who continued reporting pork intake could still achieve meaningful weight reduction while improving their overall dietary pattern. Their conclusion is not that pork is a weight-loss food, but that its presence did not prevent participants from reaching the outcomes observed in the program.

The study’s design places important limits on how the findings should be interpreted. Because participants were not randomized according to pork intake, the researchers could not determine whether pork consumption caused, contributed to or had no meaningful effect on weight loss. People who continued eating pork may have differed from those who did not in ways that influence the outcome, including food preferences, cooking habits, income, cultural background, physical activity, adherence to the digital program or willingness to complete dietary recalls. The analysis was also observational and secondary, meaning it used existing data collected for a broader weight-management program rather than testing a pork-specific intervention.

Dietary recall data bring additional uncertainty. Participants must remember and accurately report what they ate, including portion sizes, ingredients and preparation techniques. Underreporting is common in nutrition research, particularly among people concerned about their weight, and a limited number of recalls may not reflect usual intake. The Healthy Eating Index is useful for assessing overall dietary alignment, but a change in its score cannot identify which foods produced the improvement. A higher score could reflect increased fruit and vegetable intake, reduced sugary foods or lower sodium consumption, rather than any direct effect of pork.

The research was supported by the National Pork Board and WW International through grant 39G3084, and the disclosed conflicts of interest are relevant when interpreting a study focused on pork consumption. Institutions connected with several investigators received research support from WW International, while some researchers had been employees or shareholders of the company. The disclosure also lists other financial relationships involving members of the research team and organizations connected with food, pharmaceutical and biotechnology interests. Such relationships do not automatically invalidate the results, but they reinforce the importance of independent replication, transparent methods and studies designed specifically to test how different pork products, portions and preparation methods affect health outcomes.

For now, the study’s most defensible message is about flexibility rather than promotion. Adults attempting to lose weight may not need to eliminate pork if they can incorporate it into an eating pattern that controls energy intake, emphasizes nutrient-dense foods and remains realistic enough to follow. Future research should compare specific cuts and processed products, account for portion sizes and cooking methods, and include randomized designs capable of separating the effects of pork from the effects of the overall weight-management program. Until then, the findings offer a viral-friendly but nuanced takeaway: pork was not a barrier to clinically meaningful weight loss in this group, but neither has this study shown that pork itself makes weight loss easier.
