Healthy sleep may help adolescents succeed in school, new study finds

A new study from UC Davis Health suggests that sleep may be the most important everyday lifestyle factor linking mental health symptoms with academic and social difficulties in early adolescence. The analysis, published in Psychological Medicine, found that sleep quality showed a stronger association with grades and social functioning than physical activity, diet or screen exposure among children aged 10 to 13. The relationship was especially evident in young people experiencing anxiety, depression or psychotic-like disturbances.

The findings offer a potentially important shift in how families, schools and clinicians think about adolescent mental health. Anxiety and depression are often evaluated primarily through emotional symptoms, yet their practical consequences—falling grades, strained friendships and difficulty managing daily responsibilities—can be just as significant. The UC Davis researchers examined whether modifiable lifestyle behaviors might help explain why mental health symptoms are associated with poorer functioning in these areas.

To conduct the analysis, the team used data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study, a large longitudinal research project designed to track brain development, behavior and health in children across the United States. The researchers focused on four lifestyle factors: sleep quality, screen time, physical activity and diet. They then used statistical mediation models to estimate how much each factor accounted for the association between mental health symptoms and functional outcomes, including school performance and social problems.

Sleep emerged as the strongest potential mediator. In statistical terms, a mediator is a factor that may help explain the pathway connecting one variable to another. The analysis does not prove that poor sleep directly causes lower grades or that improving sleep will eliminate mental health symptoms. Instead, it indicates that differences in sleep were associated with part of the relationship between psychiatric symptoms and real-world difficulties. This distinction is important because the data describe patterns of association rather than a definitive cause-and-effect mechanism.

The effects were particularly pronounced for anxiety. Sleep accounted for an estimated 36.3% of the association between anxiety symptoms and lower grades. It accounted for 18.5% of the corresponding association involving depression and 8.3% of the association involving psychotic-like disturbances. These percentages represent the proportion of a statistical relationship that was linked to sleep-related differences in the model, not the percentage improvement that could necessarily be expected from a specific sleep intervention.

Screen time ranked second among the lifestyle factors examined. It accounted for approximately 6.3% of the association between depression and lower grades, 5% of the association involving anxiety and 6.2% of the association involving psychotic-like disturbances. Physical activity and diet showed smaller effects in this analysis. The result challenges the common assumption that screen exposure is always the dominant lifestyle influence on adolescent well-being, although the researchers do not suggest that screen habits are irrelevant.

Sleep may affect school and social functioning through several interacting biological and behavioral pathways. Insufficient or irregular sleep can impair attention, working memory, emotional regulation and cognitive flexibility—abilities that are essential for learning and navigating relationships. Sleep also interacts with the brain’s stress-response systems and circadian timing networks. When sleep is disrupted, adolescents may become more reactive to stress, less able to control negative emotions and less prepared to sustain concentration during the school day.

The developmental timing of the study is also significant. Early adolescence involves major changes in the brain, hormone activity, social expectations and daily schedules. During this period, circadian rhythms naturally shift later, while school start times and extracurricular demands may require children to wake early. Mental health symptoms can further disturb sleep through rumination, physiological arousal or changes in daily routines, creating a feedback loop in which psychological distress and poor sleep reinforce one another.

Jason Smucny, the study’s first author and a computational neuroscientist in the UC Davis Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, said the strength of sleep’s association was unexpected, particularly when compared with screen time. Senior author Tara Niendam, professor of psychiatry and executive director of the UC Davis Early Psychosis Programs, emphasized that families often care most about how symptoms affect everyday life. The results suggest that sleep could be a practical point of intervention while a young person receives appropriate evaluation and treatment.

The researchers stress that healthy sleep habits are not a replacement for professional mental health care. Persistent anxiety, depression, unusual perceptual experiences, severe mood changes or major declines in school and social functioning should be discussed with a qualified clinician. Still, the findings indicate that regular sleep schedules and improved sleep quality may represent an accessible way to support emotional well-being and daily functioning. Because the study was based on observational data and statistical modeling, future research will need to test whether targeted sleep interventions can improve academic and social outcomes in adolescents with mental health symptoms.
