In a momentous recognition underscoring the critical importance of respiratory health, the City of Chicago, in collaboration with the American College of Chest Physicians (CHEST), has officially declared October 19, 2025, as “Love Your Lungs Day.” This proclamation coincides with the 90th Annual Meeting of CHEST, scheduled from October 19 to 22, 2025, at McCormick Place in Chicago. A significant event in the pulmonary and critical care calendar, the meeting gathers more than 6,000 healthcare professionals dedicated to advancing lung health through cutting-edge research, education, and clinical innovation.

The designation of “Love Your Lungs Day” through a mayoral proclamation by Chicago’s Mayor Brandon Johnson places a sharp focus on respiratory wellness during Healthy Lung Month. This initiative aligns perfectly with CHEST’s mission to drive forward patient care innovations and advocate for robust healthcare policies in pulmonary, critical care, and sleep medicine. The proclamation is not only symbolic but also a call to action to address the widespread burden of lung diseases affecting millions across the United States.

Lung diseases represent a substantial public health crisis. Over 70 million Americans live with chronic respiratory conditions such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). These diseases profoundly impact quality of life, healthcare utilization, and mortality rates. In Cook County alone, nearly 70,000 children and 390,000 adults live with asthma, while over 250,000 residents are afflicted with COPD. The staggering prevalence demands an intensified focus on prevention, early detection, and equitable access to healthcare services.

The health disparities associated with respiratory diseases are starkly evident, particularly in Black communities that face disproportionately higher rates of asthma, COPD, and sarcoidosis. Social determinants of health, environmental exposures, and healthcare access barriers contribute to these inequities, emphasizing the need for targeted public health strategies. Recognizing these disparities is crucial for clinicians and policymakers aiming to reduce the burden of respiratory illnesses and improve outcomes in vulnerable populations.

Lung cancer, standing as the deadliest cancer in the United States, compounds the respiratory health crisis. Responsible for more annual deaths than breast, pancreatic, and prostate cancers combined, lung cancer presents considerable challenges in early diagnosis and effective treatment. The integration of advanced diagnostic tools, such as low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) screening, and advances in precision medicine hold promise in shifting the trajectory of lung cancer mortality.

The “Love Your Lungs Day” celebration during CHEST 2025 will serve as a platform to elevate awareness about the urgency of lung health. It will acknowledge the invaluable contributions of healthcare workers who tirelessly serve patients with respiratory disorders. The day will also spotlight innovations in chest medicine, including advances in pulmonology, critical care interventions, and sleep medicine technologies that improve patient outcomes and quality of life.

CHEST, with its roots tracing back to 1935 in Chicago, has evolved into a global leader with over 18,000 members specializing in chest medicine. The society’s comprehensive approach encompasses education, advocacy, and research dissemination, shaping clinical standards and fostering knowledge exchange. The upcoming Annual Meeting exemplifies this commitment by bringing together a diverse spectrum of experts, researchers, and clinicians dedicated to combating respiratory diseases.

Education remains a cornerstone in CHEST’s strategy to enhance lung health. Training sessions, workshops, and scientific presentations at the CHEST Annual Meeting will provide attendees with the latest evidence-based practices and emerging therapies in respiratory medicine. These educational endeavors are critical in translating research advances into routine clinical care, ultimately benefiting patients around the world.

Advocacy plays an equally pivotal role in driving policy changes that support respiratory health. The mayoral proclamation symbolizes a broader recognition of lung health as a public health priority that warrants sustained governmental and societal commitment. Efforts to promote air quality improvement, smoking cessation programs, and equitable healthcare access are fundamental components of such advocacy.

Innovation in research continues to propel the field forward. Studies on pulmonary alveoli physiology, airway inflammation, and the molecular pathways underpinning chronic respiratory diseases inform the development of novel pharmacotherapies and interventions. Furthermore, integrating technologies such as telemedicine and artificial intelligence enhances patient monitoring and management in pulmonary and critical care settings.

The “Love Your Lungs Day” initiative also provides a valuable opportunity to engage the public, emphasizing preventive health measures including vaccination against respiratory infections, smoking prevention, and airway hygiene. Public awareness campaigns can empower individuals to recognize early symptoms, seek timely care, and adopt lung-friendly lifestyles, thereby reducing disease burden.

As CHEST prepares to celebrate its 90-year legacy, “Love Your Lungs Day” not only honors this milestone but also reinforces a forward-looking vision where respiratory health is universally prioritized. The convergence of clinical expertise, research innovation, and community engagement embodied in this day represents a comprehensive effort to combat the global lung health challenges head-on.

This culmination of efforts by CHEST and the City of Chicago marks a pivotal moment in respiratory medicine. It underscores the necessity for continuous advancement in healthcare delivery, research, and public health policy to improve lung health outcomes and reduce the burden of respiratory diseases on individuals and healthcare systems alike.

Subject of Research: Respiratory health, chronic lung diseases (asthma, COPD), lung cancer, disparities in respiratory disease prevalence, and pulmonary medicine innovations.
