USDA announces $3 million for colleges serving Alaska Natives and Native Hawaiians

WASHINGTON, Jan. 13, 2017 – The U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) today announced $3 million in available funding to support Alaska Native- and Native Hawaiian-Serving (ANNH) colleges and universities.

NIFA's ANNH Education Grants Program addresses educational needs in the food, agricultural, and natural resource systems of the U.S. Priority is given to those projects that enhance educational equity for underrepresented students and maximize the development and use of resources to improve food and agricultural sciences teaching programs.

The application deadline is March 21, 2017.

The University of Hawaii's Agribusiness Education, Training and Incubation (AETI) project helped develop the local agricultural and food production workforce through education, training and more productive agribusiness. Three hundred and twenty four students of AETI-supported programs found employment, more than 80 new agribusinesses were launched, and existing businesses reported an average profit increase of 290 percent and an employment increase of 29 percent.

NIFA invests in and advances innovative and transformative research, education and extension to solve societal challenges and ensure the long-term viability of agriculture. NIFA support for the best and brightest scientists and extension personnel have resulted in user-inspired, groundbreaking discoveries that are combating childhood obesity, improving and sustaining rural economic growth, addressing water availability issues, increasing food production, finding new sources of energy, mitigating climate variability and ensuring food safety.
