(New York, NY) – May 25, 2021 – Neelima Navuluri, MD, of Duke University has been awarded the ATS/Mallinckrodt Research Grant on COVID-19 in Underrepresented Minorities.

The $50,000 award will help fund Dr. Navuluri’s research study, “Prospective Study of Racial Disparities in Pulmonary and QOL Outcomes Among COVID-19 Survivors.”

“This study will identify targets for future implementation studies to improve health equity among Blacks,” wrote Dr. Navuluri in her application. “It will provide preliminary data for career development award applications focused on racial and ethnic disparities in pulmonary disease.

“The work proposed by Dr. Navuluri will further our understanding of how recovery from COVID-19 is impacted by social factors,” said Neeta Thakur, MD, chair of the ATS Health Equality and Diversity Committee. “By focusing the work on upstream factors, we will not only identify targets for intervention but put the focus where it needs to be–on the underlying sources for racial and ethnic respiratory health disparities.”

“As a patient-centric company, we believe that advancing research to further address existing health disparities will help lead to better outcomes for all patients,” said Steve Romano, MD, executive vice president and chief scientific officer at Mallinckrodt. “As we continue to learn more about the impact of COVID-19, we are proud to support Dr. Navuluri’s study as she investigates the pulmonary effects of COVID-19 in underrepresented minority groups.”
