Nobel laureate Donna Strickland, quantum computing expert Ronald Hanson headline meeting that features the latest advances in optics and photonics research

WASHINGTON–The development of chirped pulse amplification (CPA) of laser light and advances toward harnessing the phenomenon of quantum entanglement to create a quantum Internet will be the topics of two plenary presentations at the 2019 Frontiers in Optics + Laser Science APS/DLS (FiO + LS) Conference, to be held 15 -19 September in Washington, D.C., U.S.A.

WHAT: Plenary talks I and II, 2019 Frontiers in Optics + Laser Science APS/DLS (FiO + LS) Conference

Where: Exhibit Hall, Marriott Wardman Park, Washington, D.C., U.S.A.

When:

Plenary I–Tuesday, 17 September at 12:00 PM EDT

Plenary II–Wednesday, 18 September at 12:00 PM EDT

Plenary 1: Dr. Donna Strickland

In her presentation titled “Generating High-Intensity, Ultrashort Optical Pulses,” Nobel Laureate Donna Strickland will recount her work with fellow Nobel Laureate GĂ©rard Mourou to use CPA to develop a laser powerful enough to exceed the electric fields inside of an atom – giving unprecedented control over electrons and enabling the generation of light at extreme wavelengths. Their work led to a new understanding of the interaction between light and matter and to innovations such as advanced laser eye surgery and precision cutting applications for industry. Strickland is professor of physics at University of Waterloo, Canada.

Plenary 2: Dr. Ronald Hanson

Ronald Hanson, scientific director at QuTech, University of Delft, The Netherlands, will talk about “The Dawn of a Quantum Internet” and describe how future quantum networks may harness the unique features of entanglement by connecting multi-qubit nodes through photonic channels–work that has led researchers to the brink of realizing the first multi-node quantum networks. He will describe the concepts, current status and prospects of quantum Internet research.
Additional expert talks and presentations are scheduled for the duration of FiO + LS, touching on four conference themes: Autonomous Systems, Quantum Technologies, Nanophotonics and Plasmonics and Virtual Reality and Augmented Vision.

###

Conference registration is open. Register on or before 19 August 2019 and save on a full technical conference pass.

About FiO + LS

Frontiers in Optics is The Optical Society’s (OSA) Annual Meeting and held together with Laser Science, a meeting sponsored by the American Physical Society’s Division of Laser Science (DLS). The two meetings unite the OSA and APS communities for five days of quality, cutting-edge presentations, in-demand invited speakers and a variety of special events spanning a broad range of topics in optics and photonics–the science of light–across the disciplines of physics, biology and chemistry. The exhibit floor will feature leading optics companies, technology products and programs.
