University of Maryland, Baltimore County wins DOE’s 2019 CyberForce Competition™

After a long suspenseful day, University of Maryland, Baltimore County earned the top spot as national winner of the U.S. Department of Energy’s CyberForce Competition.

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced University of Maryland, Baltimore County as the national winner of DOE‘s fifth CyberForce Competition™, held on November 16, 2019 at 10 of the national laboratories across America. The competition challenged 105 collegiate teams to build simulated energy infrastructure and defend it from cyberattacks. Regional first place winners were recognized by each participating laboratory.

“CyberForce brings teams together to protect against tomorrow’s threats, a uniquely American approach to problem solving,” said Energy Secretary Rick Perry. “Congratulations to this year’s winners and a big thanks to all the bright students who participated.”

The competition, which aims to inspire and develop the next generation of energy sector cybersecurity professionals, is co-funded by the DOE‘s Office of Cybersecurity, Energy Security, and Emergency Response (CESER); Office of Electricity; Office of Science; Office of the Chief Information Officer; Office of Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy; and the National Nuclear Security Administration.

The 2019 event challenged teams to defend one of four realistic system scenarios — an energy company’s solar generation facility, electric substation, high performance computing center, or manufacturing plant — while communicating with the other three infrastructures to monitor and maintain the integrity of the system as a whole. Each team was scored on its ability to safeguard against attacks while ensuring the system’s usability.

“Every year, the CyberForce Competition attracts more and more talented students,” said Karen S. Evans, Assistant Secretary for DOE CESER, “and with the expansion to address professional recruitment, the competition will only continue to grow. We envision this competition to be a tool to assist our sector to close skills gaps and shortage of cybersecurity experts.”

One hundred five collegiate teams competed in the event, 26 of them hosted at DOE‘s Argonne National Laboratory. The other participating laboratories were Brookhaven National Laboratory, Idaho National Laboratory, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, National Energy Technology Laboratory, National Renewable Energy Laboratory, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and Sandia National Laboratories.

This year, the Department of Energy also hosted a CyberForce Competition Professional Pilot at Argonne National Laboratory to coincide with the collegiate competition, in which a team of experienced cyber defenders tested their cyber prowess in a similar cyber-defense simulation. 

Corporate sponsors included the Federal Training Partnership, which produces training, technology and military-related events for government and industry, and service providers such as Microsoft Government Azure, Cavalry, Apex Systems, KeyLogic, West Monroe Partners, and Digital Silence.

“It was inspiring to watch these teams designing, building, and defending their cyber systems against attacks based on real-world scenarios,” said Argonne Director Paul Kearns. “Their enthusiasm was contagious, and it bodes well for our future ability to safeguard critical infrastructure.”

  • From Idaho National Laboratory: 1st place – University of Idaho, Idaho Falls, Idaho
  • From Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory: 1st place – University of California, Davis, California
  • From Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory: 1st place – California State University, Sacramento, California
  • From National Energy Technology Laboratory: 1st place – Baldwin Wallace University, Berea, Ohio
  • From National Renewable Energy Laboratory: 1st place – University of Colorado, Boulder, Colorado
  • From Oak Ridge National Laboratory: 1st place – University of Florida, Gainesville, Florida
  • From Pacific Northwest National Laboratory: 1st place – Oregon State University, Corvallis, Oregon
  • From Sandia National Laboratories: 1st place – Southern Methodist University, Dallas, Texas
