UCF Develops Free Resiliency Resources to Support Healthcare Workers and Students Globally

In recent years, burnout among healthcare providers has escalated to unprecedented levels, posing a grave threat not only to the well-being of medical professionals but also to the quality of patient care. A 2022 report from the Centers for Disease Control revealed that nearly half of health workers—46%—reported feeling burned out frequently, a stark increase from 38% in 2018. This alarming trend underscores the urgent necessity for effective interventions designed specifically to address the multifaceted stressors endemic to healthcare environments. Responding to this critical need, researchers from the University of Central Florida’s Academic Health Sciences Center (AHSC) have pioneered the RenewU program—a comprehensive, evidence-based virtual toolkit aimed at enhancing resilience and supporting the mental and physical health of healthcare workers.

The RenewU initiative represents a paradigm shift in how healthcare professionals can access and engage with wellness resources. Unlike generic mental health advisories proliferating on the internet, RenewU’s ten interventions are meticulously grounded in scientific evidence and tailored explicitly for the high-pressure, unpredictable nature of healthcare settings. This multidisciplinary program was developed by experts from UCF’s Colleges of Health Professions and Sciences, Medicine, and Nursing, bolstered by a $1.5 million grant from the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration. Its aim is to systematically combat burnout by promoting healthy behaviors and emotional regulation among diverse healthcare teams, ranging from large academic medical centers to smaller rural clinics.

One of the defining features of RenewU is its rigorous adherence to best practices in preventive health, drawing on recommendations from the United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF)—a panel renowned for its evidence-based guidelines. The toolkit is thoughtfully segmented to address the needs of various stakeholders within the healthcare ecosystem, including individual clinicians, interdisciplinary teams, and organizational leaders. Its inclusivity ensures that both clinical and non-clinical staff can benefit, reflecting the holistic approach necessary for cultivating a culture of wellness in health systems.

The mental well-being component of RenewU is extensive and multifaceted, focusing on stress management techniques, mindfulness training, psychological detachment strategies, boundary-setting protocols, behavioral modification methods, and approaches to navigate high-stakes or emotionally taxing scenarios. Supplemented by instructional videos from mental health professionals, users are guided through processes to disengage from work-induced stress and regain cognitive equilibrium. These modules are designed not as superficial wellness tips but as deeply practical and evidence-based tools that recognize the cognitive and emotional demands placed on healthcare providers.

Complementing the mental health strategies, the program’s physical wellness section encompasses guidance aimed at enhancing bodily health even amid demanding work schedules. For instance, it introduces the concept of ‘active rest,’ encouraging health workers to incorporate micro-exercises into their routines—simple activities such as desk-based workouts or brief walks between shifts. Nutrition is equally emphasized, with instructional content highlighting the benefits of omega-3-rich foods, like salmon and vegetables, which have been scientifically linked to improved mental health outcomes. Moreover, video tutorials led by licensed yoga instructors promote accessible physical activity and stress reduction techniques suitable for on-site or remote participation.

Pilot implementations of RenewU have yielded promising results. Involving 761 learners across UCF’s Academic Health Sciences Center, including physicians engaged in College of Medicine-HCA Healthcare residency programs, the toolkit has demonstrated applicability and receptivity among diverse healthcare professionals. Notably, emergency medicine residents at HCA Florida Osceola Hospital participated in yoga sessions facilitated in local parks, underscoring the program’s capacity to foster team cohesion while mitigating burnout. The inclusion of on-site activities alongside virtual components has reinforced RenewU’s flexibility, enhancing its impact in real-world clinical settings.

An evaluative framework was integral to RenewU’s development, employing the internationally esteemed Kirkpatrick Model to assess educational efficacy across reaction, learning, behavior, and results dimensions. This systematic approach ensures that the toolkit not only disseminates knowledge but also drives meaningful behavior change, ultimately contributing to improved workplace culture and patient care quality. Such rigor distinguishes RenewU within the landscape of health professional wellness solutions, many of which lack validated outcomes or interdisciplinary focus.

Beyond local adoption, RenewU’s influence has extended globally, with documented utilization by over 2,500 individuals, including healthcare workers in Canada, Ireland, Sweden, and Germany. The program has garnered recognition for its innovative approach to interprofessional education, contributing to UCF’s receipt of the National Award for Institutional Excellence and Innovation in Interprofessional Education from the Association of Schools Advancing Health. Integration into the AHSC’s mandatory curriculum and collaboration with the University of Florida’s College of Pharmacy on a five-week virtual stress management course highlight RenewU’s adaptability and scalability.

Central to the program’s educational success is the use of digital platforms such as Yellowdig, which facilitate peer interaction, reflective dialogue, and shared exploration of wellness strategies across multiple campuses. These dynamic learning communities empower healthcare learners to contextualize evidence-based practices within their own experiences, fostering resilience and communal support. The interactive nature of the program aligns with contemporary pedagogical trends emphasizing active learning and social engagement.

Importantly, the RenewU toolkit offers continuing education credits for licensed healthcare providers, incentivizing ongoing professional development and engagement with burnout mitigation techniques. This feature not only enhances the program’s appeal but also bridges the gap between wellness education and professional competency standards. It positions self-care and resilience-building as integral to medical practice, rather than ancillary concerns.

In summarizing its contributions, the RenewU program epitomizes an evidence-based, integrative response to an escalating crisis in healthcare provider burnout. By delivering a tailored suite of mental and physical health interventions within a versatile virtual framework, the toolkit offers practical, accessible, and validated resources that acknowledge the complexities of modern healthcare delivery. As healthcare systems worldwide grapple with workforce retention and quality care imperatives, such innovations are indispensable to fostering sustainable professional well-being and optimal patient outcomes.
