Today, clinical-stage end-to-end artificial intelligence (AI)-powered drug discovery company Insilico Medicine announced that Alvaro Alvarez Ricciardelli will join the judge committee of Docuthon, a documentary competition designed to tell the story of AI drug discovery.

Alvaro is a Spanish-Argentinian journalist, producer, filmmaker and editor based between London and Barcelona. He has produced and contributed to a variety of programs for the BBC, and has directed and produced critically acclaimed films exploring the intersection of technology, innovation, and society. He is passionate about human stories, specializes in observational documentaries, and has earned a global reputation as an insightful commentator and thought leader.

“I’m looking for how participants can bring things out from this story that will connect to people on a human level,” says Ricciardelli, “that will connect to the people not only in the brain, but also in their heart and make the audience understand that this is something we all need to be engaged with and how this is something that can benefit us all.”

For the Docuthon competition, Insilico is providing substantial footage captured over its nearly decade-long journey that includes in-depth interviews with executives, scientists, and advisors and candid looks into Insilico’s inner workings – solving scientific challenges, securing funding, and advancing a lead AI-discovered and AI-designed therapeutic for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis into clinical trials. Participants from around the world are invited to utilize this footage to tell the story of advances in AI-powered drug discovery. Categories include best feature, best short, best curated, and most creative, with prize amounts ranging from $4,000 to $8,000. Interested participants are invited to register today.

“I’m thrilled to have an established filmmaker like Alvaro as one of our Docuthon judges,” says Alex Zhavoronkov, PhD, founder and CEO of Insilico Medicine. “AI drug discovery is truly at a tipping point and I’m eager to see how filmmakers can use the footage to bring this inspirational story to the big screen.”
