Society for Disaster Medicine & Public Health Preparedness, Inc. to host 4th Annual Meeting

The Society for Disaster Medicine and Public Health Preparedness, Inc. (SDMPH) will host its 4th Annual Meeting in Washington, DC on October 31, 2018 at the Kaiser Family Foundation, 1330 G Street, NW., Washington, DC, and at the American Public Health Association Headquarters, 800 I Street, NW., Washington, DC on November 1, 2018.

The meeting on October 31 will feature experts primarily focused on Citizen Preparedness for Nuclear/Radiation Events. Dr. Robert Kadlec, Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response (ASPR) at the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) is the keynote speaker on the National Biodefense Strategy.

Jim James, MD, Dr PH, executive director of the Society, said the event will allow attendees to hear the latest on the level of preparedness within the US and will also provide opportunities to interact and exchange ideas while earning CE credit. CE is available for October 31.

According to Dr. James "A primary focus of this meeting and the Society for Disaster Medicine and Public Health going forward is championing a Prepared Citizenry as the best single intervention to decrease morbidity and mortality across all types of disasters"

The meeting will feature the following experts:

Keynote Address I – National Biodefense Strategy
Speaker: Robert Kadlec, MD

Session 1: Citizen Preparedness for Nuclear/Radiation Events

Panel 1 – Moderator: Jim Blumenstock, MA

Panelists: Gerald White, PhD (Training and Tools for Radiological Emergency Preparedness), Kelly Klein, MD (Radiation, preparing for the glow that you can't see),

John F. Koerner, MPH, CIH (What Do I Do? Decision Making and Preparedness for Citizens Following a Nuclear Detonation), Regina Hawkins, MPH (Medical and Public Health Preparedness for a Nuclear Incident: Through an Organization Lens),

Cham Dallas, PhD (Modeling for nuclear events to project population and healthcare asset vulnerability across four major US cities)

11:30 – 11:45 Q & A

Lunch

Keynote Address II – Tener Veenema, PhD (National Health Care Workforce Development for Disaster and Public Health Emergency Response)

Session 2 – Proposed Regional Disaster Health Response System (RDHRS)

The New York City Experience), Donald Donahue (Minding the Gap: Challenges in Effective Regional Response Coordination), Craig DeAtley ( (National Capital Region Approach to Disaster Response)

CONTINUING EDUCATION:

Participants can earn continuing education contact hour credits in Nursing (CNE), and Medicine (CME for physicians and non-physicians) during the Meeting. One continuing education credit is earned for every 60 minutes of educational content. The maximum is 5.0 credits.

Continuing Medical Education (CME) – The American Public Health Association is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to approve continuing medical education for physicians.

Continuing Nursing Education (CNE) – The APHA/PHN Section is accredited as an approver of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation.

Professional Development (CPD) Unit and its respective Continuing Education accrediting organizations do not endorse any products or services that are displayed or referred to in conjunction with this activity:
