In a resounding testament to scientific excellence, ten distinguished researchers from Scripps Research have been named to Clarivate’s prestigious Highly Cited Researchers™ list for 2025. This annual honor recognizes investigators whose scholarly publications are among the top 1% by citation count for their respective fields and publication years, according to the Web of Science Core Collection, spanning an eleven-year period. The inclusion on this list is a rare accolade, signifying that these researchers are part of an elite group representing only one in a thousand of the global scientific community, whose work has profoundly influenced their disciplines.

The Highly Cited Researchers designation not only reflects prolific scholarship but underscores the exceptional impact these scholars have had on shaping contemporary science. As David Pendlebury, head of research analysis at Clarivate’s Institute for Scientific Information, explains, this recognition spotlights individuals who combine innovative rigor with ethical publication practices. Their discoveries and intellectual contributions continue to drive technological progress, inspire new academic inquiries, and foster societal advancement on a global scale.

Within the realm of chemical sciences, Phil Baran and Jin-Quan Yu stand out with transformative approaches that have broadened the capabilities of synthetic chemistry. Professor Baran’s pioneering work in developing radical-based methodologies has shattered traditional boundaries, enabling the scalable and sustainable synthesis of complex organic molecules including peptides and oligonucleotides. His strategies streamline synthetic pathways, offering valuable alternatives to conventional techniques that often rely on multistep processes and hazardous reagents. Meanwhile, Professor Yu’s development of innovative chemical transformations has had far-reaching implications for medicinal chemistry and materials science, emphasizing precision and efficiency in molecular design.

Microbiology, a field crucial to understanding and combating infectious diseases, is prominently represented by Dennis Burton, Ian Wilson, and Andrew Ward. Burton’s groundbreaking contributions to vaccine research have significantly advanced efforts to control HIV and emerging viral threats, including coronaviruses. His work integrates immunology with structural biology to elucidate mechanisms of pathogen-host interactions. Ian Wilson’s expertise in structural virology and immune system imaging has propelled insights into the architectures of SARS-CoV-2, HIV-1, and influenza viruses, guiding vaccine formulation and therapeutic interventions. Andrew Ward’s investigative prowess in integrative structural biology led to the identification of the first human coronavirus spike protein structure in 2016, a landmark achievement that provided a foundation for the rapid development of COVID-19 vaccines.

Expanding the technological frontier of biomedical research, Stefano Forli’s focus on computational methods for structural biology and drug discovery introduces powerful tools to design molecules targeting disease mechanisms. By harnessing in silico modeling and advanced algorithms, his approach facilitates the identification of potential therapeutic targets, accelerating the drug development pipeline by predicting molecular interactions with unprecedented accuracy.

The interdisciplinary and cross-field category includes Ardem Patapoutian, whose Nobel Prize-winning research on protein sensors has revolutionized our understanding of sensory biology. His discovery of molecular mechanisms that underlie the perception of pain, temperature, and mechanical pressure has opened new avenues for pharmacological modulation of sensation and pain management. David Nemazee’s influential investigations into immune tolerance and response have deepened the scientific community’s grasp of immune system dynamics, providing critical insights that inform vaccine design, particularly for HIV and influenza. Meng Yuan’s research further complements these efforts by focusing on immune recognition, antigen presentation, and structure-guided design of vaccines and therapeutics, leveraging structural biology to optimize immune responses against pathogens.

John Yates’ pioneering development of the SEQUEST software and associated algorithms has made indispensable contributions to the field of proteomics. By enhancing the analytical power of mass spectrometry, his innovations allow for the precise identification and characterization of proteins, facilitating breakthroughs across diverse biological and medical research domains.

Notably, many of these acclaimed scientists have repeatedly appeared on the Highly Cited Researchers list, underscoring a sustained pattern of influence and thought leadership. Baran, Burton, Wilson, and Yu continue their streak of recognition, while Patapoutian and Yates mark their eighth inclusion, highlighting enduring contributions to their disciplines over the years.

Scripps Research’s prominence as an institution is reflected through its commitment to advancing human health via groundbreaking biomedical research. Ranked among the world’s most influential research entities by the Nature Index, Scripps fosters interdisciplinary collaboration to address complex medical challenges. Its divisions, such as the Calibr-Skaggs drug discovery and development unit, prioritize the rapid translation of scientific discoveries into therapeutic solutions. Concurrently, the Scripps Research Translational Institute leverages genomics, digital medicine, and computational informatics to revolutionize personalized healthcare.

The institute also plays a pivotal role in cultivating the next generation of scientific leaders through its Skaggs Graduate School, which consistently ranks among the top programs nationally for chemistry and biological sciences. This combination of elite research and educational excellence ensures Scripps Research remains at the forefront of innovation, shaping the future trajectory of biomedical science and its applications to global health.

This confluence of exceptional talent and cutting-edge research at Scripps Research exemplifies how dedicated scientific inquiry, coupled with innovative methodologies, can yield transformative impacts across multiple disciplines. The recognition by Clarivate affirms their important role in advancing knowledge while addressing some of the most pressing health challenges of our time.

Subject of Research: Accelerated biomedical and chemical research with cross-disciplinary impacts in vaccine development, synthetic chemistry, sensory biology, computational structural biology, and proteomics.
