Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (NTU Singapore) and China's University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS) are strengthening research and exchange ties.

Under the five-year agreement, the two leading institutions in Asia will enhance joint research collaborations as well as ramp up visits and exchanges for students, academic and research staff. An area of focus will be in translating research outcomes in fields such as artificial intelligence and data analytics.

NTU Chief of Staff and Vice President (Research), Professor Lam Khin Yong, and UCAS Vice President, Professor Wu Yueliang, signed the Memorandum of Understanding yesterday at UCAS, Beijing.

Professor Lam said, "NTU Singapore has a long-standing relationship with the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences. This new collaboration in areas of mutual interest will deepen our ties further, with an important aim of translating research into beneficial outcomes for society."

Professor Wu said, "We have always worked closely with NTU Singapore, this time both parties have embarked on an all-rounded collaboration for five years. Relevant faculty and departments will enhance their ties, paving the way for win-win collaborations between the two institutions."

One key research area will be looking at translating existing and future research advances in artificial intelligence (AI), Internet-of-Things (IoT), big data analytics and virtual reality (VR) into useful commercial products and services.

To achieve this, the NTU-University of British Columbia (UBC) Research Centre of Excellence in Active Living for the Elderly (LILY), led by Professor Miao Chun Yan from NTU, will work with UCAS to develop potential applications in healthy ageing and education.

About University of Chinese Academy of Sciences

Headquartered in Beijing, the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS) is a university established with the approval of Ministry of Education of PRC, focusing on graduate education. Its predecessor was the Graduate University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (GUCAS), the first graduate school in China. It boasts many firsts in new China: the first doctorate in science, the first doctorate in engineering, the first female student awarded a doctoral degree, and the first research student awarded double doctoral degrees in China all graduating from this university.

In June 2012, GUCAS was renamed UCAS. It started enrolling undergraduate students for the first time, and its mission is to cultivate innovative leading talents in science and technology for the future of the nation. Now there are 1058 registered undergraduate students studying in this university.

Being the largest graduate education institution, UCAS' main task has long been graduate education. Up to December 2016, the number of postgraduate students is 45,479, including 23,289 doctoral students, 22,190 master students, and 1321 international students including 873 doctoral students, ranking first in China.
