New Algorithms Maximize Network Clustering Disparity Through Variation of Information

Researchers Nam P. Nguyen and Subrata Acharya have investigated the problem of maximizing the disparity between two partitions of a complex network, establishing its theoretical complexity and introducing algorithmic solutions. In a study published on 21 August 2026 in Applied Network Science, the authors examined how to identify a network grouping that diverges as substantially as possible from an established configuration. Specifically, given an initial partition designated as X of a complex network, the investigation focuses on finding a second partition Y that maximizes the dissimilarity VI(X, Y) between the two partitions, with disparity quantified according to the Variation of Information metric. The authors designated this computational challenge as the Partition Difference Maximization problem, identifying it as fundamental to understanding both the structural organization of networks and their responses to adversarial perturbations.

In their theoretical analysis of the problem, Nguyen and Acharya first established the NP-hardness of Partition Difference Maximization, confirming the fundamental computational difficulty of identifying an optimal maximal partition for a network. To address this computational barrier, the researchers proposed two approximation algorithms designed to construct new partitions, denoted as Y, for the network.

Beyond analyzing general network instances, Nguyen and Acharya extended their theoretical analysis to various network types characterized by different community structures.

To evaluate their theoretical formulations and assess the practical behavior of the two approximation algorithms, the authors conducted extensive experiments on both real-world and synthetic networks containing up to 10,000 nodes. Their empirical evaluation methodology incorporated formal statistical significance tests and comprehensive comparisons with non-trivial alternative clustering methods.
