New Orleans, LA – After a national search, Interim Chancellor Steve Nelson, MD, CM, appointed Angelo J. Mariotti, DDS, PhD, Dean of the LSU Health New Orleans School of Dentistry. Dr. Mariotti began his new role on January 3, 2023.

Dr. Mariotti was recruited from The Ohio State University College of Dentistry, where he was a professor and Chair of the Department of Periodontology. There, he was instrumental in transforming the curriculum, increasing educational outcomes at both pre-and post-doctoral levels, increasing fundraising, improving facilities, building research, expanding clinics, and enhancing faculty development.

Dr. Mariotti is a Fellow of the International College of Dentists, the American College of Dentistry, and the Pierre Fauchard Academy. He is both a Diplomate and Director of the American Board of Periodontology. He is an editor of Pharmacology and Therapeutics for Dentistry. His more than 100 papers in peer-reviewed journals and textbooks focus on the pharmacologic actions of agents in the oral cavity and topics related to dental health care economics.

Dr. Mariotti has served in various leadership positions for numerous national and international dentistry organizations while maintaining an active clinical practice in periodontology. Dr. Mariotti received his Bachelor of Science in biology and education from Grove City College, a PhD in Pharmacology & Toxicology from West Virginia University, a DDS from West Virginia University, and specialty training in periodontology from the Medical College of Virginia.

“Dr. Mariotti brings a proven record of success that will enormously benefit our School of Dentistry and the citizens of Louisiana,” notes Dr. Nelson. “Our Dental School trained about 75% of the dental professionals practicing in the state.”

LSU Health New Orleans School of Dentistry is the only dental school in Louisiana. It is unique among the more than 65 dental schools in the United States because it offers degrees in dentistry, dental hygiene and dental laboratory technology, along with advanced postgraduate training in Endodontics, General Dentistry, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Orthodontics, Pediatric Dentistry, Periodontics, and Prosthodontics. LSU Health New Orleans School of Dentistry offers a level of training that has resulted in the school’s reputation for outstanding clinical education.

“Oral health shapes our interactions throughout the day since it affects our ability to eat, speak, and show emotions,” says Dr. Mariotti. “When oral health is impacted, it influences how we function at work, school and play. As one of the premier dental schools in the nation, the LSU Health New Orleans School of Dentistry works to serve the citizens of Louisiana for better oral health through education, research, service and outreach.  It is my great honor to be a faculty member and to lead the School of Dentistry into the future.”
