Philadelphia, 2017 — Jeffrey H. Samet, MD, MA, MPH, FACP, has been awarded the American College of Physicians (ACP) Richard and Hinda Rosenthal Award #1 from the Rosenthal Family Foundation for his innovative work in the field of addiction medicine. The award will be presented at ACP's Convocation Ceremony on Thursday, April 19, 2018, at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center.

Samet is an internationally recognized expert in addiction medicine care and research at Boston Medical Center (BMC), where he is chief of the section of general internal medicine at Boston University School of Medicine.

He is vice chair for public health in the department of medicine and the John Noble, MD, professor of medicine and professor of community health science at Boston University Schools of Medicine and Public Health, respectively. He also is the founding director of the BMC/BU Clinical Addiction Research and Education Unit, where he has focused on the development, implementation and evaluation of theory-based behavioral interventions among substance using populations both locally and internationally. In addition, he has an impressive record of mentorship.

"I am honored and humbled to receive this award, but I am just one of an outstanding team that makes this progress possible," said Samet. "To its credit, the BMC/BU medical campus has embraced the importance of substance use treatment and creative innovations in the field by enabling the recruitment and retention of some incredibly talented people."

Samet received his bachelors and masters in chemistry at Brandeis University, his masters in public health at BU, and his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine. He completed his residency and chief residency at Boston City Hospital, which later became Boston Medical Center, and completed a fellowship in general internal medicine at Harvard University and Massachusetts General Hospital.

The award is given to "that physician-scientist, clinician, or scientific group whose recent innovative work is making a notable contribution to improve clinical care in the field of internal medicine."
