Washington, DC (May 1, 2017) The International Communication Association will hold its annual conference May 25-29 in San Diego, CA at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront Hotel. The theme of the 2017 conference will explore how Communication intervenes political events and social phenomena to disrupt the status quo.

Featuring over 2,000 academic papers on Communication and attended by over 2,500 Communication scholars across the globe, the ICA conference is the largest scholarly international communication conference in the world. This year's conference features sessions focusing on issues at the US/Mexico border, political communication, and ICA's first ever Making & Doing event that will showcase research in practice presented through data visualizations, computer programs, art, and performance.

With the help of University of California – San Diego, San Diego State University, and University of San Diego, ICA will also host a number of preconference sessions. The variety ranges from activism at the border, digital games, and post-truth politics.

"Today, we witness serious global crises, including unprecedented population displacement and migration flows, climate change, the elision of the middle class in the North and a growing middle class in the South. In the US, we witness new rigorous actions to tighten up and even close borders to certain individuals. Academics of Communication, which is a deeply interdisciplinary field, offer nuanced analyses of the history, context and impacts of these crises, as well as potentials for interventions that produce change." said Paula Gardner, ICA President-Elect and Professor at McMaster University in Canada.

"San Diego is the perfect location for this conference. Our intervention theme invites participants to present research on regional issues such as migration and refugee rights, missing and disappeared peoples, environmental concerns, and to connect with the city's important LGBTQ history. Our opening plenary is designed around the city of San Diego, featuring interventions of scholars who are also media/art makers to provide nuanced readings of 'the border.'" Gardner added.
