In a remarkable leap forward for robotic perception and spatial awareness, researchers at MIT have unveiled innovative technologies that allow machines to “see” and reconstruct objects hidden behind obstacles by harnessing surface-penetrating wireless signals. For over a decade, this team has been pioneering approaches to enable robots to locate and manipulate objects concealed from direct view. By exploiting the reflective properties of millimeter wave (mmWave) signals, which can penetrate materials like drywall and plastic, these robots gain access to a form of wireless vision that challenges traditional imaging limitations.
The breakthrough rests on the fusion of these wireless sensing techniques with the formidable power of generative artificial intelligence (AI). By analyzing reflections caused by humans moving within a space, researchers developed an expanded system that can reconstruct a room’s layout — including furniture and walls — using only a single stationary radar. The method offers the added advantage of privacy preservation, as it does not rely on cameras capturing visual images of occupants.
The potential applications of these inventions are vast and impactful. Within warehouse settings, autonomous robots could employ these techniques to verify the contents of packed boxes, dramatically reducing costly product returns. At home, smart robots could leverage improved spatial understanding to locate individuals within a room, enhancing the safety and efficiency of their interactions. The ability to reconstruct occluded objects opens new vistas in robotics, smart environments, and human-robot collaboration, marking a qualitative leap in machine perception.
At the heart of this progress is the Wave-Former system, which synthesizes a range of possible object surfaces from mmWave reflections, inputs them into a generative AI framework trained on physics-adapted simulated data, and iteratively refines the shapes until a faithful 3D reconstruction is achieved. Unlike conventional AI models that require massive labeled datasets, the researchers ingeniously transformed existing computer vision databases to emulate the unique characteristics of mmWave reflections—including specularity and noise—circumventing the need to collect years’ worth of specialized data.
This innovation addresses a fundamental challenge in wireless-based imaging: the specular nature of mmWave wave reflections leads to limited visibility, especially for surfaces facing away from the sensor. Previously, this resulted in incomplete top-down views that left sides and undersides unseen. The generative AI model bridges these gaps by leveraging learned priors about object shapes to propose plausible completions. Testing across approximately 70 common household items hidden behind various materials showed a nearly 20% enhancement in reconstruction accuracy compared to state-of-the-art methods.
Expanding beyond isolated objects, the research team devised RISE, a system that interprets “ghost” signals generated by multipath reflections involving moving humans in a room. These reflections create time-varying echoes caused when signals bounce off a person before reflecting again from walls or furniture, encoding spatial information often discarded as noise. By training a generative AI model to decode these complex patterns, RISE refines initial coarse reconstructions into precise scenes, achieving double the accuracy of previous techniques using data from just one stationary mmWave radar.
This dual approach to wireless vision not only enables robots to locate and manipulate hidden objects but also promotes non-invasive scene understanding without infringing on privacy—a notable limitation of camera-based systems. As these technologies mature, the researchers envision further improvements in resolution and detail granularity, along with the development of large-scale foundational models for wireless signals analogous to major AI frameworks like GPT or Claude, which could revolutionize applications across robotics, sensing, and beyond.
Fadel Adib, associate professor at MIT and director of the Signal Kinetics group, emphasizes the transformative nature of this work: “Using AI to finally unlock wireless vision represents a qualitative leap in capabilities, from filling gaps we could not previously see to interpreting complex reflections and reconstructing entire scenes.” His team’s path-breaking papers have been accepted for presentation at the prestigious IEEE Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition, underscoring the significance of their contributions to the intersection of AI, wireless sensing, and robotics.
