In recognition of National Minority Health Month in April, the National Institutes of Health is hosting its fifth annual Science Day. The event is held to promote diversity in the biomedical workforce by helping young people from diverse backgrounds increase their health literacy, learn about advances in science and connect with biomedical professionals. The event is co-sponsored by the National Library of Medicine, the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities, Friends of the National Library of Medicine and Mentoring in Medicine, a non-profit organization that works with underprivileged students to inspire and prepare them to become health care and science professionals. More than 500 students — many of them African American or Hispanic–will tour NIH and participate in presentations from a diverse group of scientists and program officers about biomedical research career options.
