The agroecologist, Professor Teja Tscharntke from the University of Göttingen, has been awarded the Marsh Award for Ecology by the British Ecological Society. The prize is awarded for an outstanding current research record which is having a significant impact on the development of the science of ecology or its application. It is provided by the Marsh Christian Trust and administered by the British Ecological Society. The award is endowed with £1000.

Tscharntke is Head of the Agroecology Group at the University of Göttingen. His research focuses on biodiversity and the composition of plant and animal communities as well as the interactions between plants and insects. “I am very pleased that my research areas have been recognised by this award,” said Tscharntke. “These areas include concepts and findings about how landscape structure affects local biodiversity and related ecosystem services, such as pollination and biological pest control. In addition, we focused very early on pollination as an important process that influences the structure of communities.”
