Dr. Dyson-Hudson receives American Paraplegia Society’s Excellence Award

East Hanover, NJ. August 28, 2018. In recognition of his outstanding contributions to improving the lives of individuals with spinal cord injury, Trevor Dyson-Hudson, MD, of Kessler Foundation, was selected as this year's recipient of the Excellence Award of the American Paraplegia Society, a section of the multi-disciplinary Academy of Spinal Cord Injury Professionals (ASCIP). The Excellence Award is awarded each year at ASCIP's annual conference. This year, ASCIP members convene at the New Orleans Marriott from September 2nd to 5th.

Since 1994, the Excellence Award has honored nationally prominent professionals who have demonstrated outstanding leadership in spinal cord injury/dysfunction (SCI/D) health care including service delivery, research, education, prevention, or administration.

"Joining the ranks of those honored with the Excellence Award is gratifying," said Dr. Dyson-Hudson. "Early in my career, I was fortunate to be mentored by Drs. Steven Kirshblum, Joel DeLisa, Adam Stein, and Kristjan Ragnarsson who all inspired me to pursue rehabilitative medicine, a path that has brought me personal as well as professional satisfaction.

Dr. Dyson-Hudson has a national role in advancing care and quality of life through research funded by federal, state and private sources. He serves as director of SCI Research at Kessler Foundation and co-director for Kessler's federally funded SCI Model System – the Northern New Jersey SCI System, and is an associate professor in the Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation at Rutgers, New Jersey Medical School.

Dr. Dyson Hudson is a well-known expert in the secondary complications of SCI, including pain, shoulder dysfunction in wheelchair users, mobility impairment, and other secondary medical conditions associated with SCI. Of note, he is lead investigator for a novel SCI study of a medication that improves walking in multiple sclerosis, and for a pilot study of a new regenerative medicine intervention for shoulder pain in wheelchair users with SCI. Under his leadership, his team has made important contributions to user guidelines for wheelchair maintenance and training, which help people remain active and confident in their abilities to work, travel and care for themselves and others. His research interests extend to areas that are key to full community participation and successful employment. Dr. Dyson-Hudson serves as medical director for a pilot project that is succeeding in getting newly injured individuals back in the workplace. Preliminary results are encouraging for this model of early intervention, which incorporates vocational rehabilitation and resources during inpatient rehabilitation.
