DFG to establish 14 new priority programs

The Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation) has approved the establishment of 14 new Priority Programmes (PP) for 2019. Priority Programmes aim to examine fundamental scientific issues relating to particularly topical or emerging areas of research. The new programmes were selected by the Senate of the DFG – Germany's largest research funding organisation and central self-governing organisation for the research community – from a total of 53 submissions.

The newly approved Priority Programmes cover the entire spectrum of disciplines, from the humanities and social sciences, life sciences and natural sciences to engineering sciences. Topics range from the digital image to spatial genome architecture in development and disease, the evolutionary optimisation of neuronal systems, through to the Perovskite semiconductor and property-controlled forming processes.

All of the programmes are highly interdisciplinary and are notable for their application of innovative methods. Early career support is a key element and one of the essential prerequisites for the establishment of a new Priority Programme. All new Priority Programmes also feature a gender equality strategy.

The programme designation describes the overriding topic of the collaboration. Over the coming months, the DFG will announce a separate call for proposals for each of the programmes. Proposals will be evaluated to determine their research quality and their contribution to the respective main topic. Approximately €80 million will be available for the 14 new programmes in the first three-year funding period. There will also be a 22 percent programme allowance for indirect project costs. Priority Programmes are generally funded for six years. Currently, a total of 98 Priority Programmes are being funded.

The new Priority Programmes, grouped according to scientific discipline, are:

  • Computational Literary Studies
    (Coordinator: Prof. Dr. Fotis Jannidis, University of Würzburg)
  • The Digital Image
    (Coordinator: Prof. Dr. Hubertus Kohle, LMU Munich)
  • The Iranian Highlands: Resilience and Integration of Premodern Societies
    (Coordinator: Prof. Dr. Thomas Stöllner, Ruhr University Bochum)

Life Sciences

  • Spatial Genome Architecture in Development and Disease
    (Coordinator: Prof. Dr. Stefan Mundlos, Institute of Medical Genetics and Human Genetics of the Charité, Berlin)
  • Evolutionary Optimisation of Neuronal Processing
    (Coordinator: Prof. Dr. Fred Wolf, Max Planck Institute for Dynamics and Self-Organisation, Göttingen)
  • Molecular Mechanisms of Functional Phase Separation
    (Coordinator: Prof. Dr. Edward A. Lemke, University of Mainz)
  • Radiomics: Next Generation of Biomedical Imaging
    (Coordinator: Prof. Dr. Fabian Bamberg, University of Tübingen)
  • Natural Sciences

  • Dynamic Wetting of Flexible, Adaptive and Switchable Surfaces
    (Coordinator: Prof. Dr. Uwe Thiele, University of Münster)
  • Novel Production Processes and Multi-Scale Analysis, Modelling and Design of Cell-Cell and Cell-Bioreactor Interactions (InterZell)
    (Coordinator: Prof. Dr.-Ing. Ralf Takors, University of Stuttgart)
  • Perovskite Semiconductors: From Fundamental Properties to Devices
    (Coordinator: Prof. Dr. Lukas Schmidt-Mende, University of Konstanz
  • Engineering Sciences

  • Adaptive Modularised Constructions Made in a Flux: Rapid, Economical and Alterable
