Professor Dan M. Frangopol is the winner of the EuroStruct2023 International Award of Merit presented by the EuroStruct Executive Committee in recognition of outstanding contributions to bridge and structural asset management and structural engineering.
Frangopol, the inaugural Fazlur R. Khan Endowed Chair of Structural Engineering and Architecture in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Lehigh, was presented with the award during EuroStruct 2023, the second Conference of the European Association on Quality Control of Bridges and Structures, held Sept. 25-29, 2023, at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences (BOKU), Vienna, Austria.
The conference focuses on “the research and development of sustainable and environmentally-friendly solutions,” according to its website, and seeks “to address all aspects of quality control plans in bridges and tunnels’ safety and management, integrating the most recent knowledge on performance assessment procedures with the adoption of specific goals.”
The International Award of Merit, awarded for the first time at EuroStruct2023, recognizes an individual whose work “has helped in significantly strengthening the scientific base of structural asset management including quality control, assessment and management of bridges and structures.”
Frangopol is a world-renowned expert in structural reliability, optimization, and life-cycle engineering of civil and marine structures. Over the course of his distinguished career, he has authored/co-authored four books, more than 60 book chapters, and over 450 articles in archival journals, including 14 prize-winning papers. Frangopol is Founding President of the International Association for Bridge Maintenance and Safety (IABMAS) and the International Association for Life-Cycle Civil Engineering (IALCCE).
He is the recipient of several medals, awards, and prizes from ASCE, IABSE, IASSAR, SAE, and other professional organizations. He has served as a consultant or advisor to companies in North America, Asia, and Europe.
Frangopol holds four honorary doctorates and 14 honorary professorships from major universities. He has achieved membership in eight academies: the National Academy of Construction (USA), the Canadian Academy of Engineering, the Academy of Engineering of Mexico, the Academia Europaea (Academy of Europe, London), the Engineering Academy of Japan, the Royal Academy of Belgium for Science and the Arts, the Romanian Academy, and the Academy of Technical Sciences of Romania. He is a distinguished member of ASCE.
