Cell symposia on CRISPR: From biology to technology

Juan Carlos Izpisua Belmonte of the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, whose lab was involved in a recent, successful effort to correct a gene mutation in human embryos, is one of a number of distinguished speakers participating in the upcoming Cell Symposia on CRISPR: From Biology to Technology and Novel Therapeutics. The conference, organized by Cell Press, takes place October 22-24, 2017, in Sitges, Spain.

The event will provide a comprehensive view of CRISPR as an entire field, including talks from microbiologists, biochemists, structural biologists, and scientists who are developing and using CRISPR technologies for therapeutic/agricultural benefit. Participants will hear about work that will inspire new generations of CRISPR-based tools and gain a broader appreciation for the intricacies of applying CRISPR technology.

"CRISPR systems have evolved to protect microbes from phage invaders but have recently been repurposed by scientists as powerful tools for biological discovery and biotechnology," says co-organizer John Pham, editor of the journal Molecular Cell. "Building on recent accomplishments in gene editing to unleash the full potential of CRISPR-based technologies will require a deeper understanding of the basic biology of how these systems work."
