Bibliometric Study Maps Mental Health Help-Seeking Research

A recent bibliometric analysis published in Discover Mental Health provides a comprehensive overview of the global research landscape concerning mental health help-seeking interventions. The study, conducted by Junming Ma, Joo Siang Tan, and Jiawei Xu, examined the development and knowledge structure of this specific field over a ten-year period, from 2014 to 2024. By systematically evaluating the existing literature, the researchers aimed to identify thematic trends, geographical concentrations, and areas of emerging focus within the broader context of mental health care.

The primary objective of the research was to address the limited comprehensive evaluation of the global knowledge structure and thematic evolution in help-seeking intervention studies. While individual empirical studies on this topic are numerous, the authors noted that a unified view of the field’s trajectory had been lacking. To achieve this, the team mapped the development of the research area to understand how interventions are being studied and where the scientific community is directing its efforts.

For the data collection phase, the researchers retrieved bibliographic information from the Web of Science Core Collection, specifically utilizing the SCI-Expanded and SSCI databases.

Following a rigorous eligibility screening and manual relevance checking process, the final dataset included 95 peer-reviewed experimental and quasi-experimental studies. The resulting sample provides a focused view of the interventional research conducted during the specified decade.

Performance analysis of the included studies revealed a substantial increase in publication output after the year 2020. Geographically, the research output was heavily concentrated in Western high-income countries, with the United States, Australia, and the United Kingdom emerging as the leading contributors.

Thematic analysis identified several prominent and interconnected areas of research, with help-seeking, stigma, mental health literacy, depression, and adolescents appearing as key topics. The thematic map further illustrated that research focused on stigma, mental health literacy, and adolescent populations was highly relevant to the field. However, the degree of development varied across these topics, indicating that some areas are more mature than others. In contrast, digital interventions, early-intervention strategies, and several population-specific topics remained comparatively peripheral or less developed within the overall thematic structure.

The findings indicate an expanding but geographically uneven evidence base for mental health help-seeking interventions. Asian settings and low- and middle-income countries were found to be comparatively underrepresented in the Web of Science-indexed literature. This disparity highlights a significant gap in the global research landscape, as mental health challenges are prevalent worldwide, yet the evidence base is skewed toward Western contexts.

Based on these observations, the authors suggest that future research should prioritize the development of culturally responsive interventions.
