Washington, D.C. May 23, 2018 — The American College of Physicians (ACP) will award Andy Slavitt the Joseph F. Boyle Award for Distinguished Public Service. The award will be presented at 7:00 am ET on May 23 at the Grand Ballroom of the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Washington, D.C. where ACP is hosting its annual advocacy day, Leadership Day, a two-day event where ACP member internists and medical students learn about the legislative process and key policy issues from ACP staff, members of Congress, congressional staff, and independent policy analysts.

The Joseph F. Boyle Award for Distinguished Public Service was established by ACP's Board of Regents in 1990, in honor of the late Dr. Joseph E. Boyle, former Executive Director of the American Society of Internal Medicine from 1985 to 1992. The award honors a current or former government official or a physician acting in an official capacity (state or federal, executive, or legislative) who has provided outstanding public service toward improving the delivery of health care.

Slavitt is the board chair of The United States of Care, a new nonpartisan, nonprofit initiative that advocates for economically and politically feasible solutions to the nation's current health care challenges. His career has been focused on advancing non-partisan health policies that promote accessible, affordable health care for all Americans, regardless of an individual's health status, social need, or income.

As the former Acting Administrator at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), Slavitt played an instrumental role in increasing access and affordability of health care by implementing the Affordable Care Act, shifting the delivery system of care to reward value rather than volume based payment models through the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act (MACRA), and improving the delivery of care through alternative payment models such as the Patient Centered Medical Home.

Prior to his position at CMS, Slavitt was an executive at Optum, a subsidiary of UnitedHealth Group, where he oversaw the health services division that improved the HealthCare.gov website, making it easier for Americans to purchase and enroll in health insurance plans. Slavitt graduated from both The College of Arts and Sciences and the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania in 1988, and earned an MBA from the Harvard Business School in 1993
