Leesburg, VA, December 19, 2022—The American Roentgen Ray Society (ARRS) is pleased to announce Jon A. Jacobson, MD, FACR, as the 2023 ARRS Distinguished Educator. The ARRS Distinguished Educator award recognizes outstanding individuals in the field of medical imaging, who have a proven record of improving radiological education and remain committed to creating and implementing new and innovative educational activities.

Dr. Jacobson will be formally recognized as the 2023 ARRS Distinguished Educator during the opening ceremony of the ARRS Annual Meeting in Honolulu, HI on Sunday, April 16, 2023.

An ARRS member for more than three decades, Dr. Jon A. Jacobson presented his first ARRS Scientific Exhibit abstract during the 1994 ARRS Annual Meeting. Since then, he’s delivered more than 50 presentations at our Annual Meeting, winning every laurel: magna cum laude and cum laude awards, silver and bronze medals, as well as multiple certificates of merit. In October 2005, Dr. Jacobson was appointed to the Editorial Advisory Panel of ARRS’ American Journal of Roentgenology (AJR); he went on to serve as assistant editor of the journal’s musculoskeletal section from 2008 to 2019. Author of well more than 100 articles, letters, and supplements our “yellow journal,” he also served on ARRS’ Scientific Program Musculoskeletal Subcommittee for two years. Currently, Dr. Jacobson serves on the Scientific Program Committee and Educational Evaluation Subcommittee.

ARRS’ Distinguished Educator award celebrates truly inspirational teachers—like Dr. Jon A. Jacobson—dedicated to education that results in improved participant performance, ultimately leading to enhanced patient outcomes. Dr. Jacobson has disseminated to countless radiologists and other health professionals the most current scientific and clinical information regarding diagnostic imaging, image-guided intervention, and related fields. Keeping the worldwide imaging community abreast of state-of-the-art techniques, he continues to stimulate critical thinking and reflection in both the science and practice of radiology.

A tireless promoter of radiological research, Dr. Jacobson is especially adept at developing and supporting educators within the specialty. An engaging presence who motivates and impacts learners and colleagues alike, he exhibits his commitment to ARRS’ own educational initiatives with special attention to the needs and diversity of our members. Keenly able to identify pressing issues in imaging curricula, while offering trenchant analysis and insightful solutions, Dr. Jacobson has made significant contributions resulting in instructional programs that greatly benefit this society’s entire membership.

Jon A. Jacobson, MD, FACR, is a board-certified musculoskeletal radiologist. His educational background includes radiology residency at Henry Ford Hospital and musculoskeletal fellowship at the University of California at San Diego. After working for 23 years at the University of Michigan as Division Director, and then at the University of Cincinnati, Dr. Jacobson currently works at Lenox Hill Radiology in New York City. With research interests in musculoskeletal ultrasound and MRI, his academic achievements include over 250 peer-reviewed publications. A visiting professor on over 50 occasions, he has also received numerous teaching and mentoring awards from the residents at University of Michigan. Active in various medical societies and a reviewer for several journals, Dr. Jacobson was awarded the President’s Medal by the International Skeletal Society. He is President-Elect of the Society of Skeletal Radiology. In 2008, Dr. Jacobson authored the reference book Fundamentals of Musculoskeletal Ultrasound, a volume in the Fundamentals of Radiology series, which is now in its third edition. Information about his musculoskeletal ultrasound global outreach efforts in Uganda can be found at www.jacobsonmskus.com.
