The American Pediatric Society (APS) announces renowned neonatology leader David K. Stevenson, MD as the 2019 APS John Howland Award recipient. The award signifies the society's recognition of Dr. Stevenson for his significant contributions to advancing academic pediatrics through clinical care, scientific discovery, mentorship, leadership, and service.

The APS John Howland Award, created in honor of clinician-scientist John Howland, MD, is the most prestigious award bestowed by the APS. Since 1952, the annual award has recognized individuals for distinguished service to pediatrics as a whole.

Dr. Stevenson has made pioneering contributions to neonatology and pediatrics through extensive research in bilirubin biochemistry, heme oxygenase biology and neonatal jaundice. His work has led to the development of new technologies and standards of care for treating children with neonatal jaundice. Dr. Stevenson currently serves as the Harold K. Faber Professor of Pediatrics and Senior Associate Dean for Maternal and Child Health at Stanford University School of Medicine.

"We are delighted to present the 2019 APS John Howland Award to Dr. Stevenson," said APS President Bruce D. Gelb, MD. "He has made stellar contributions to pediatric medicine as a distinguished clinician, researcher, teacher, and mentor. His work will have a wide-ranging and lasting impact on child health for generations to come."

Dr. Stevenson is an accomplished investigator in neonatal biology. He has published over 600 original articles and edited several textbooks on neonatology. He has also maintained continuous funding from the National Institutes of Health for nearly 40 years. Dr. Stevenson has held many leadership roles and earned numerous awards throughout his impressive career.

"I am deeply honored and humbled to receive the John Howland Award," said Dr. Stevenson. "I join an outstanding group of past recipients committed to improving pediatric research, education and clinical care. I also want to acknowledge the hard work and ingenuity of my colleagues and team at Stanford."

The award will be presented to Dr. Stevenson on April 28 at the APS Presidential Plenary session at the 2019 Pediatric Academic Societies Meeting in Baltimore. For more information about the APS John Howland Award and past award recipients, please visit the APS website.
