John DeLuca, PhD, Senior Vice President of Research and Training at Kessler Foundation, has been named 2018 Fellow of the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine (ACRM). Dr. DeLuca, a clinical neuropsychologist, is recognized for his outstanding record of professional service to ACRM and contributions of national significance to the field of medical rehabilitation. Dr. DeLuca accepts this honor at the Henry B. Betts Awards Dinner & Gala, October 2nd, at the ACRM 95th Annual Conference in Dallas, TX.
"Through its support of evidence-based research, ACRM encourages all of us to strive for best practices that improve rehabilitation outcomes. Its support is critical to ensuring that the next generation of rehabilitation professionals has the knowledge and skills to continue to improve the lives of people with disabilities. I am honored to be named a Fellow of the ACRM," he remarked.
Dr. DeLuca oversees rehabilitation research and training at Kessler Foundation, which includes the areas of traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, stroke, multiple sclerosis (MS), cancer, rehabilitation engineering and employment. "Our research is providing new ways to treat individuals with disabilities, so that they can continue to participate in the workplace and the community, and ultimately achieve improved quality of life," said Dr. DeLuca. "Providing young investigators with the skills they need to conduct research is a priority at Kessler Foundation," he noted. "More than 40 postdoctoral fellows have launched their careers in rehabilitation research through Kessler Foundation's Fellowship Training Program."
Dr. DeLuca often lectures at professional conferences and universities throughout the world, and collaborates with colleagues in Europe and Australia, as well as the U.S. On his most recent sabbatical, he collaborated with MS experts at Kliniken Schmeider in Konstanz, Germany. Dr. DeLuca is the author of more than 350 articles, books, and chapters. He is the co-editor of "Cognition and Behavior in Multiple Sclerosis", a new text published by the American Psychological Association, which details the latest research to influence care for persons with multiple sclerosis. Dr. DeLuca is co-editor of the new 2nd edition "Encyclopedia of Clinical Neuropsychology". Published by Springer, it is the first and major encyclopedia of adult and pediatric neuropsychological disorders.
Dr. DeLuca has received numerous awards, including early career awards from the American Psychological Association and the National Academy of Neuropsychology, and the Benton mid-career award from the International Neuropsychological Society. He was also the recipient of the Medical Excellence Award and 2017 Volunteer Hall of Fame award from the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and the Fred Foley Award for Best Practices in Mental Health and MS from the Consortium for Multiple Sclerosis Care. In 2018, he was named a Fellow in the Association for Psychological Science. Dr. DeLuca is a professor in the Departments of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation and Neurology at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School.
