ROCKVILLE, MD – The Biophysical Society (BPS) has named Raymond Stevens, Provost Professor and Director of the Bridge Institute, Department of Biological Sciences and Chemistry, University of Southern California, as its 2019 Anatrace Membrane Protein Award winner. Stevens will be honored at the Society's 63rd Annual Meeting at the Baltimore Convention Center on March 5, 2019, during the annual Awards Symposium.

Stevens is being honored for his work in the development of membrane protein structural biology technologies, including nanoliter crystallization robotics, nanoliter imaging, micro-expression and screening of constructs, thermal stability analysis, and the fusion partner toolchest. These technologies have led to ground-breaking, seminal work on the structures, evolution, and successful therapeutic targeting of the G protein-coupled receptor superfamily.

"We are pleased to recognize outstanding contributions to the important field of membrane protein research," said BPS President Angela Gronenborn, University of Pittsburgh. "Ray has significantly advanced the development of technologies for membrane protein structural biology that are assisting researchers all over the world. We are excited to highlight his impact in this field."

The Anatrace Membrane Protein Award, supported by Anatrace Inc., was established to recognize an outstanding investigator who has made a significant contribution to the field of membrane protein research. The award is designed to promote membrane protein studies and recognize excellence in the field.

The Biophysical Society, founded in 1958, is a professional, scientific Society established to encourage development and dissemination of knowledge in biophysics. The Society promotes growth in this expanding field through its annual meeting, monthly journal, and committee and outreach activities. Its 9000 members are located throughout the U.S. and the world, where they teach and conduct research in colleges, universities, laboratories, government agencies, and industry.
