The ACMG Foundation for Genetic and Genomic Medicine announced that it has received a $165,000 commitment from Pfizer to provide funding for education and training in clinical genetics in the form of fellowship grants for 2017-2019.

The ACMG Foundation/Pfizer Clinical Genetics Training Fellowship Award will provide funding for the salary and research of fellows selected by the ACMG Foundation.

Bruce R. Korf, MD, PhD, FACMG, president of the ACMG Foundation said, "We are grateful to Pfizer for their continuing commitment to supporting the training of the next generation of medical geneticists. This is an investment that will help ensure that the rapid advances in genetics and genomics are quickly translated into the better care of our patients."

"Pfizer has generously supported the training of future geneticists since 2013 through the ACMG Foundation," says ACMG Foundation Executive Director, Michael S. Watson, PhD, FACMG. "Together, with Pfizer's support we are working to overcome the shortage of laboratory and clinical geneticists in the United States. These fellowships will ultimately improve access to specialists with advanced training in genetics and genomics, improve care for patients with both rare and common diseases, and develop clinician scientists."

Michael P. Wajnrajch, MD, MPA, Pfizer's Senior Medical Director/Global Medical Affairs Lead said, "Pfizer is proud to partner with ACMG to promote greater education and awareness in the field of Medical Genetics."

More information about applying for the ACMG Foundation/Pfizer Clinical Genetics Training Fellowship Award will be available during the summer of 2016 at http://www.acmgfoundation.org.
