Wireless magnetic implants track muscle movement through skin

Researchers have developed a skin-mounted sensor system that wirelessly tracks tiny magnetic beads implanted inside muscle tissue, capturing detailed muscle movements in real time. The platform, described in Nature Sensors, uses an array of magnetometers worn on the skin to follow the positions of passive, 3-millimetre-diameter magnetic beads at sub-millimetre resolution, at tissue depths of up to 6 centimetres.

To test the approach in people, the team deployed the platform in three participants with transtibial amputation, tracking a constellation of permanently implanted magnets.

According to the study, wireless muscle-state estimation from the magnetic system matched or outperformed standard surface and implanted electromyography across most of the evaluated outcomes. The participants achieved accurate and responsive neuroprosthetic movement, and the platform showed stable performance over time. The researchers also demonstrated that muscle activation could be detected through magnetic induction alone, which they highlight as a potential alternative to electromyography.

The magnetic approach instead measures the physical mechanics of muscle movement directly, which the authors say provides an intuitive control signal for synchronizing movement with wearable robotics. The findings are limited to the small number of participants studied, and the platform remains a research demonstration rather than an approved clinical technology, but the results suggest that magnet-based sensing could offer a route to more precise and stable control of prosthetic and robotic devices.
