The New York Stem Cell Foundation (NYSCF) 12th Annual Translational Stem Cell Research Conference convenes global leaders in translational stem cell and neuroscience research to present their latest work towards new treatments and cures for the most devastating diseases and injuries currently facing the world.
The two-day conference features discussions on transformative new technologies in the field, how to get new research into the clinic for patients, and challenges in the regenerative medicine field as well as disease area-specific panels on topics such as the nervous system, blood and cancer, and diabetes among others.
At the conference, NYSCF will announce the new, 2017 class of NYSCF – Robertson Stem Cell and Neuroscience Investigators and award the 2017 NYSCF – Robertson Stem Cell Prize, a prestigious, unrestricted award given annually to the most promising young stem cell scientist conducting groundbreaking research towards cures. The Prize recipient will present their innovative research in a keynote address. Lauren Miller, CIRM and Hilarity for Charity, will give a keynote address as a patient advocate and non-scientist who is passionate about accelerating promising research. Irving Weissman, MD, Stanford University, will also give a keynote address on his work on hematopoietic, or blood-forming, stem cells and brain stem cells that has vast implications on cancer treatment including ongoing clinical trials.
The session on the nervous system features NYSCF's inaugural Chief Medical Officer Melissa Nirenberg, MD, PhD, a neurologist and movement disorders specialist, who will chair the discussion between Esteban Mazzoni, PhD, NYU, and NYSCF's Valentina Fossati, PhD, on their work modeling and studying amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and multiple sclerosis using stem cells, respectively.
Valentina Greco, PhD, Yale University and NYSCF – Robertson Stem Cell Investigator, will chair a session on the clinical application of stem cell research towards cures for skin diseases. Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator Elaine Fuchs, PhD, The Rockefeller University, will discuss studying squamous cell carcinomas uing hair follicle stem cells. Valerie Horsley, PhD, Yale University, will share her research on tissue repair and skin wound healing.
Viviane Tabar, MD, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, will chair the "Expressway to the Clinic" session. Malin Parmar, PhD, Lund University, NYSCF – Robertson Stem Cell Investigator will present on current clinical trials for Parkinson's disease, and Clive Svendsen, PhD, Cedars-Sinai Regenerative Medicine Institute, will discuss the pathway to a current clinical trial for a combined stem cell and gene therapy to treat ALS and other neurodegenerative diseases. Tippi MacKenzie, MD, University of California, San Francisco, will discuss treating alpha thalassemia major patients with in utero stem cell transplantation, research that is moving forward into a phase I clinical trial.
Stephen Tsang, MD, PhD, Columbia University Medical Center, will chair the discussion on eye disease. Dr. Tsang and Pete J. Coffey, DPhil, University College London and University of California, Santa Barbara, will share their work bringing stem cell treatments for macular degeneration to the clinic, including the framework for a clinical trial in development with the NYSCF Research Institute. Henry Klassen, MD, PhD, University of California, Irvine, will discuss his work treating retinitis pigmentosa with stem cells, including ongoing safety trials in patients.
Susan L. Solomon, NYSCF CEO and Co-founder, will join a panel on the "Frontiers of Cancer Research and Therapy" with José Baselga, MD, PhD, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Carla Grandori, MD, PhD, SEngine Precision Medicine, and Irving Weissman, MD, Stanford University. Author and journalist Laura Landro will moderate the discussion.
Area-specific presentations during sessions such as "Diabetes and Heart Disease," "Blood and Cancer," and "Tissues and Organs" will demonstrate the range of applications for stem cells to treat many different diseases. Douglas Melton, PhD, Harvard Stem Cell Institute, will discuss his work making pancreatic beta cells for diabetes and discuss the challenges of bringing these advances to clinical trials. Takanori Takebe, MD, Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, Yokohama City University, and NYSCF – Robertson Stem Cell Investigator will present his work creating organ buds from stem cells for various applications towards generating applicable treatments for patients.
