Complete chloroplast genome of feijoa sequenced and characterized

Researchers have assembled and characterized the complete chloroplast genome of feijoa (Feijoa sellowiana, syn. Acca sellowiana), an economically important fruit tree in the family Myrtaceae. The new data note, published in BMC Genomic Data, describes a dataset intended to fill a gap in genomic resources for the species, where complete chloroplast genome datasets have remained limited.

The plastome was generated using Illumina sequencing and measures 159,374 base pairs in length. It exhibits the typical quadripartite structure seen in chloroplast genomes, consisting of a large single-copy region of 87,932 bp, a small single-copy region of 18,598 bp, and a pair of inverted repeats of 26,422 bp each.

Annotation of the genome identified a total of 129 unique genes. This total includes 84 protein-coding genes, 37 tRNA genes, and 8 rRNA genes, providing a basic functional inventory of the feijoa chloroplast.

To place the new genome in an evolutionary context, the team carried out phylogenetic analysis based on complete chloroplast genomes. The analysis confirmed that Feijoa sellowiana is nested within the Myrteae clade, a grouping within Myrtaceae.

According to the authors, generating plastome data is essential for phylogenetic analysis, molecular marker development, and germplasm research. The newly released dataset is presented as a genomic resource for studies of plastome evolution, phylogenetic inference, and molecular breeding in Myrtaceae.

Feijoa is valued as a fruit tree, and the data note frames the limited availability of chloroplast genome resources as a constraint on research into the species. The dataset is offered as a step toward addressing that limitation for the Myrtaceae more broadly.

As a data note, the publication reports the generation and basic characterization of the dataset rather than testing hypotheses about chloroplast function or breeding outcomes. The findings are limited to the genome assembly, gene annotation, and phylogenetic placement described in the study.

The complete chloroplast genome sequence and its annotation are now available to researchers working on Myrtaceae genomics, where the authors expect the resource to support future work on plastome evolution and molecular breeding.
