New centrality measure pinpoints critical junctions in time-dependent road networks

Researchers have introduced a new way to identify the most important junctions in a road network, one that accounts for how traffic actually moves through the city over time rather than relying on static maps of streets. The measure, called Temporal Path-Based Centrality (TPBC), was developed by Vishnu Priya S. and Kalyani Desikan and published in Applied Network Science as an open access research article.

Traditional centrality measures for temporal networks tend to rely on temporal reachability or shortest paths, treating all feasible time-respecting paths as equivalent once their ordering in time is satisfied. TPBC instead evaluates node importance using three components: Relative Temporal Delay, Congestion Delay and Relative Hop. Rather than depending on a single optimal path, the method aggregates contributions from all feasible time-respecting paths, weighting each according to its delay, congestion and structural efficiency.

To build the temporal network, the team used GPS trajectories from the T-Drive dataset, aligning them to the road network with Hidden Markov Model-based map matching to construct an event-based temporal network. Because enumerating every possible path would be computationally prohibitive, the researchers bounded path enumeration using practical limits on path length and the number of feasible paths.

Experiments on the Chaoyang district road network across seven days showed that TPBC exhibited the strongest correlation with observed traffic volume among the measures tested, while capturing aspects of node importance not reflected by purely structural or instantaneous road-condition measures. Notably, the measure identified influential junctions predominantly on residential and lower-order roads rather than on major arterial infrastructure.

Node-removal experiments provided further support for the measure. When the junctions selected by TPBC were removed from the network, the result was substantially greater reductions in time-respecting connectivity and network efficiency than removals of randomly chosen nodes, and this pattern held across all seven days examined.

Sensitivity analyses confirmed that these findings remained robust to variations in both the path-enumeration bounds and the relative weighting given to delay, congestion and structural efficiency. According to the authors, the results establish TPBC as a robust, data-driven framework for identifying critical nodes in temporal transportation networks, with potential applications in traffic management, infrastructure planning and urban resilience.

Subject of Research: A temporal path-based centrality measure for identifying critical junctions in event-based road networks.
