The program of the upcoming World Congress of Gerontology and Geriatrics will feature four exclusive sessions designed to aid reporters in their coverage of aging issues. The Gerontological Society of America (GSA) is hosting the World Congress on behalf of the International Association for Gerontology and Geriatrics from July 23 to 27 at the San Francisco Marriott Marquis hotel and Moscone West convention center.

The events listed below will take place in room Nob Hill C at the Marriott. Advance registration for the World Congress is required; journalists are eligible to register free of charge.

Luncheon Press Briefing: "GSA's KAER Toolkit: A Four-Step Process to Detecting Cognitive Impairment and Earlier Diagnosis of Dementia"
Monday, July 24, Noon to 1:15 p.m.
In July 2017, The Gerontological Society of America (GSA) made publicly available a free toolkit to aid primary care providers in achieving greater awareness of cognition in their older adult patients, increasing cognitive detection of cognitive impairment, securing earlier diagnostic evaluation, and referring to community services. The GSA-developed toolkit is focused on the KAER model, first introduced in a 2015 report from the Society's Workgroup on Cognitive Impairment Detection and Earlier Diagnosis. The acronym is derived from a four-step process: Kickstart the cognition conversation; Assess for cognitive impairment; Evaluate for dementia; and Refer for community resources. This toolkit is valuable because it brings together in one place an extensive amount of existing evidence-based, practical, and easy-to-use guidance to the busy primary care provider about how to work with older adults and their families who are concerned about brain health and cognitive decline. Hear representatives from GSA and its workgroup discuss the toolkit's development, its significance, and its potential. (This briefing was developed and supported by GSA.)
Speakers: Richard H. Fortinsky, PhD, professor, University of Connecticut School of Medicine; Katie Maslow, MSW, visiting scholar, The Gerontological Society of America; James C. Appleby, BSPharm, MPH, executive director and CEO, The Gerontological Society of America

Press Briefing: "Interprofessional Solutions for Improving Oral Health in Older Adults: Addressing Access Barriers, Creating Oral Health Champions"
Monday, July 24, 3 to 4:15 p.m.
As an essential element of healthy aging, oral health in older adults deserves expanded attention in clinical, economic/financial, and humanistic aspects of care as well as in the curricula for dental and other health professionals. Hear about the concepts and solutions generated by a multidisciplinary audience to address access barriers and create interprofessional oral health champions in research, education, policy and funding arenas. (This briefing was developed by The Gerontological Society of America and supported by GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare.)
Speaker: Stephen Shuman, DDS, MS, associate professor, director, Oral Health Services for Older Adults Program, University of Minnesota School of Dentistry and Graduate School.

Luncheon Press Briefing: "Preparing for Longer Lives: Strategies for Individuals, Systems, and Societies"
Tuesday, July 25, Noon to 1:15 p.m.
With more than 38 million members and approaching its 60th anniversary, AARP advocates on behalf of Americans 50+ and their families. At this panel, AARP experts will discuss a new ranking of each U.S. state's capacity to provide long-term services for our rapidly aging nation (more than 10,000 people turn 65 every day and that is projected to happen for the next 13 years), and share the findings of a new AARP report focused on how 12 countries are preparing for the rapid growth of their age 60+ populations over the next 35 years. The speakers will also share findings from the new "Disrupt Aging" supplemental issue of The Gerontological Society of America's journal The Gerontologist, which explored how attitudes on aging can impact health, performance on tasks involving memory and stamina, and quality of life. (This briefing was developed and supported by AARP.)
Speakers: Jonathan Stevens, MPH, MBA, senior vice president for thought leadership, AARP; Sarah Lock, senior vice president for policy, AARP; Susan Reinhard, PhD, RN, FAAN, senior vice president and public policy institute director, AARP; Erwin J. Tan, MD, director of thought leadership-health, AARP

Journalists Meet-Up and Reception
Tuesday, July 25, 5 to 8 p.m.
Join other reporters attending the conference at this important networking event! It will kick off with introductions and a discussion of emerging issues on the age beat, followed by an informal reception. Wine and hors d'oeuvres will be served.

Complimentary press registration information and an online meeting planner are available at http://www.iagg2017.org/media.

The mission of the International Association of Gerontology and Geriatrics (IAGG) is to promote the highest levels of achievement in gerontological research and training worldwide, and to interact with other international, inter-governmental and non-governmental organizations in the promotion of gerontological interests globally and on behalf of its member associations. IAGG has 73 member organizations in more than 65 countries worldwide with a combined membership of more than 45,100 professionals. The IAGG World Congress of Gerontology and Geriatrics is a major vehicle through which IAGG achieves its objectives (held every four years). Internationally recognized experts in gerontology and geriatrics share their knowledge and experience through plenary presentations, invited symposia, paper, and poster sessions.

The Gerontological Society of America (GSA) is the nation's oldest and largest interdisciplinary organization devoted to research, education, and practice in the field of aging. The principal mission of the Society — and its 5,500+ members — is to advance the study of aging and disseminate information among scientists, decision makers, and the general public. GSA's structure also includes a policy institute, the National Academy on an Aging Society, and an educational unit, the Association for Gerontology in Higher Education.
