The program of the upcoming World Congress of Gerontology and Geriatrics will feature four exclusive sessions designed to aid reporters in their coverage of aging issues. The Gerontological Society of America (GSA) is hosting the World Congress on behalf of the International Association for Gerontology and Geriatrics from July 23 to 27 at the San Francisco Marriott Marquis hotel and Moscone West convention center.

Luncheon Press Briefing: "GSA's KAER Toolkit: A Four-Step Process to Detecting Cognitive Impairment and Earlier Diagnosis of Dementia"
Monday, July 24, Noon to 1:15 p.m.
In July 2017, The Gerontological Society of America (GSA) made publicly available a free toolkit to aid primary care providers in achieving greater awareness of cognition in their older adult patients, increasing cognitive detection of cognitive impairment, securing earlier diagnostic evaluation, and referring to community services. The GSA-developed toolkit is focused on the KAER model, first introduced in a 2015 report from the Society's Workgroup on Cognitive Impairment Detection and Earlier Diagnosis. The acronym is derived from a four-step process: Kickstart the cognition conversation; Assess for cognitive impairment; Evaluate for dementia; and Refer for community resources. This toolkit is valuable because it brings together in one place an extensive amount of existing evidence-based, practical, and easy-to-use guidance to the busy primary care provider about how to work with older adults and their families who are concerned about brain health and cognitive decline. As an essential element of healthy aging, oral health in older adults deserves expanded attention in clinical, economic/financial, and humanistic aspects of care as well as in the curricula for dental and other health professionals. Hear about the concepts and solutions generated by a multidisciplinary audience to address access barriers and create interprofessional oral health champions in research, education, policy and funding arenas. With more than 38 million members and approaching its 60th anniversary, AARP advocates on behalf of Americans 50+ and their families. At this panel, AARP experts will discuss a new ranking of each U.S. state's capacity to provide long-term services for our rapidly aging nation (more than 10,000 people turn 65 every day and that is projected to happen for the next 13 years), and share the findings of a new AARP report focused on how 12 countries are preparing for the rapid growth of their age 60+ populations over the next 35 years. The speakers will also share findings from the new "Disrupt Aging" supplemental issue of The Gerontological Society of America's journal The Gerontologist, which explored how attitudes on aging can impact health, performance on tasks involving memory and stamina, and quality of life.
