Bulk Acoustic Resonator with Vertical Electrodes Enables Wideband Filters

A team led by Stettler, Navarro-Gessé, Collado and colleagues has unveiled a new kind of bulk acoustic resonator (BAR) designed specifically to expand the bandwidth of high-performance filters. Published in Communications Engineering in 2026, the work targets a persistent bottleneck in acoustic device engineering: achieving strong, stable resonance control across wider frequency ranges without sacrificing signal integrity.

At the core of the advance is a resonator architecture that uses vertical electrodes rather than the more common lateral electrode layouts. In bulk acoustic systems, electrodes act as the mechanical “drivers” and “sensors” that convert electrical energy into acoustic waves inside a piezoelectric structure. By reorienting the electrodes vertically, the researchers shape the electromechanical coupling so that the resonant response can spread more effectively over frequency, supporting wider filtering windows.

The device is built to better manage how acoustic energy propagates through the resonant material. Wideband filters are challenging because spurious modes—unwanted vibrational patterns—can blur the distinction between passbands and stopbands. The authors report that their vertical electrode configuration helps suppress detrimental behavior while maintaining the useful resonant peaks needed for practical filter functions.

Technically, the approach leverages the geometry of the electrode stack to influence the motion of the piezoelectric medium and the resulting impedance landscape. That means the resonator can be tuned to deliver sharper transfer characteristics across broader ranges, an attribute that matters for modern communications systems that rely on dense channel spacing and rapidly changing spectral requirements.

Beyond bandwidth, the study emphasizes robustness and manufacturability. Vertical electrode designs are often attractive because they can be integrated using established fabrication steps, potentially reducing barriers to scaling and reproducibility. For engineers, that translates into a more realistic path from lab prototype to component-level adoption.

The implications are immediate for RF front-ends, including next-generation wireless links and potentially satellite and defense communications, where wide frequency coverage and reliable selectivity are non-negotiable. As more systems adopt wider modulation bandwidths, filter architectures must evolve just as quickly.

If the performance holds under broader operating conditions, the vertical-electrode BAR could become a key building block for compact, high-selectivity wideband filtering. The authors’ results also point to a wider design philosophy: using electrode orientation and device geometry as levers to “engineer” the acoustic response rather than merely compensate for it.
