From 7-10 May 2024, distinguished early- to mid-career scientists and scholars from around the world will convene in Washington, D.C., for the GYA’s 2024 Annual General Meeting (AGM) and Conference, which this year features a joint GYA/CoARA event “Reforming Research Assessment to Foster an Open and Socially Responsive Research Culture”.

The event, which is part of the CoARA Boost project, will take place from 13:00 – 15:00 (UTC -4) on 6 May and will examine current research assessment practices that perpetuate a “publish or perish” culture, prioritise quantity over quality, and reward prestige over integrity. Discussants will explore efforts such as the Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA), the Latin American Forum on Research Assessment (FOLEC-CLACSO), and the Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment (CoARA), all of which seek reform by promoting openness, integrity, and equity.

Workshop speakers

Luciana Balboa, GYA member (Institute of Experimental Medicine, Argentina)/CoARA Steering Board Member

Véronique Kiermer, Chief Scientific Officer, Public Library of Science (PLOS); Member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences Strategic Council on Research Excellence, Integrity, and Trust

Brian Nosek, Co-founder and Executive Director, Center for Open Science

Ismael Ràfols, UNESCO Chair on Diversity and Inclusion in Global Science, Leiden University.

Laura Rovelli, Coordinator, Latin American Forum for Research Assessment – Latin American Council of Social Sciences

Karen Stroobants, Steering Board Member, CoARA

Do join us for this important dialogue on reshaping research culture and ensuring inclusivity in reform efforts!

In doing so, it channels the intellectual excellence and experience of European academies for the benefit of the research community, decision-makers and the public. ALLEA is constituted as a non-for-profit association and remains fully independent from political, religious, commercial or ideological interests. Learn more at www.allea.org.

About the Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment
The Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment (CoARA), established in 2022, unites over 620 members globally, spanning research organizations, funders, policymakers, and infrastructures. Its mission is to enable a systemic reform of research assessment, emphasizing qualitative judgement and peer review while responsibly integrating quantitative indicators. Signatories commit to shared principles, 10 commitments, and a reform timeframe, fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange. CoARA serves as a platform for members to learn from each other’s experiences and collectively advance research assessment practices worldwide.

About the Global Young Academy
The vision of the GYA is science for all; science for the future, and its mission is to give a voice to young scientists and researchers around the world. The GYA, founded in 2010, is an independent science academy of 200 outstanding early- to mid-career researchers from six continents who are selected from across disciplines based on their academic excellence and commitment to engage with society. GYA members serve five-year terms, and the GYA presently counts members and alumni from 100 countries. The GYA administrative Office is publicly funded and hosted at the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina. The wide array of GYA activities are supported by a range of international public and private funders.
