Meet the ASPB #PlantBio2023 Conference Correspondents
Xiaohui Li is a PhD candidate in the Staiger-Zhang lab at Purdue University and a 2023 ASPB Plantae Fellow. He is a cell biologist who also does some coding. Currently, Xiaohui is studying the mechanism and regulation of the exocytosis process in plant cells, using a combination of quantitative cell biology, chemical genetics and computational biology approaches. Beyond that, he has broad interests in plant biology, including cell dynamics, evolution, and host-microbe interactions. You can find him on Twitter at @Xiao_hui_Li.
Solène Moulin is a postdoctoral researcher in the Yeh lab at Stanford University and an assistant features editor at the Plant Cell. Her research focuses on the stable endosymbiosis of a nitrogen-fixer in Epithemia diatoms. She studies this endosymbiosis as a model for a nitrogen-fixing organelle and pushes acquired knowledge to create a synthetic nitrogen-fixing organelle in plants. She completed her PhD in Cellular and Molecular Biology at the Atomic and Alternative Energy Center (CEA) in France, focusing on hydrocarbon production in microalgae for biofuel production. She earned her master’s in plant biology at Paris-Sud University, France, and her bachelor’s at the ENS Ulm, France, where she majored in cellular and molecular biology. Idowu Arinola Obisesan is a university lecturer at Bowen University Iwo, Nigeria. Her research focuses on abiotic and biotic stresses on crops and legume sustainability. She completed her PhD in plant physiology at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria. She is passionate about science communication. You can find her on Twitter at @IdowuAobisesan.
Kaushik Panda is a Research Scientist at the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center in St. Louis, Missouri, USA. Slowly moving away from the bench, he has grown as a bioinformatics scientist and uses next generation sequencing data to solve genetic mysteries. Recently, he published as the lead author of a study that uncovered mechanisms controlling the heritability of plants’ growth response to elevated CO2 environment.
He obtained his PhD in Molecular Genetics from The Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio uncovering multiple mechanisms that silence the mobile genetic units Transposable Elements (TEs). Prior to this, Kaushik earned his Integrated MS in biology from Indian Institute of Science Education & Research, Kolkata, India. Besides science, he is passionate about traveling exploring different cultural and culinary experiences. Kaushik also loves playing and following the wonderful game of squash. Charlay Wood is currently in the final year of her PhD program at the University of York, UK, diving deep into the fascinating world of enzyme discovery in plant specialized metabolism. She is on a mission to unlock the secrets hidden within the intricate biochemical pathways of plants.
Her passion doesn’t stop at the lab bench. She absolutely loves sharing the wonders of science with the public and making it accessible to everyone. Whether it’s through engaging talks, writing articles, or getting involved in science events, Charlay is all about breaking down complex concepts into bite-sized chunks that leave people inspired for more.
