The Association for Computing Machinery Special Interest Group on Information Retrieval (ACM SIGIR) today announced the inception of the SIGIR Academy to honor and recognize individuals who have made significant, cumulative contributions to the development of the field of information retrieval (IR). Inductees to the Academy are the principal leaders in IR, whose efforts have shaped the discipline or industry through significant research, innovation, and/or service. Each year, a small cohort of three to five new members will be elected to the Academy. Induction is an official ACM award.

“We started the Academy to recognize more of the great work happening in IR, including a broader range of ways to contribute to the field beyond traditional research contributions,” explained Ryen White, founding chair of the SIGIR Academy selection committee. “We wanted to highlight the efforts of a broader set of individuals and show that significant industry innovation and service contributions are also highly valued by the SIGIR community.”

In this, the first year of the Academy, the following 25 individuals from across the globe are being inducted into the Class of 2021: James Allan, Ricardo Baeza-Yates, Nicholas Belkin, Andrei Broder, Jamie Callan, William Cooper, W. Bruce Croft, Susan Dumais, Edward Fox, Ophir Frieder, Norbert Fuhr, Marti Hearst, Kalervo Järvelin, Thorsten Joachims, Noriko Kando, Diane Kelly, Michael Lesk, Yoelle Maarek, Alistair Moffat, Marc Najork, C.J. van Rijsbergen, Stephen Robertson, Tefko Saracevic, Ellen Voorhees, and Chengxiang Zhai.

These inaugural inductees, drawn from academia, industry, and beyond, have made a broad range of significant contributions to the science of IR, search engine technologies, and the IR research community.

Nominations for the Class of 2022 can be submitted to the chair of the selection committee via email and will be accepted through December 31, 2021. The selection committee will decide which subset of the nominees, if any, will be inducted into the Academy.

The criteria for election to the Academy are as follows:

  • Cumulative contributions to the field of IR,
  • Impact on the field through the development of new research directions, innovations, and/or service,
  • Influence on the work of others, and
  • A reasonably active participant in the ACM SIGIR community.
